This paper describes the cultural semantics of internet courses in American accent. Such courses are offered by corporate providers to specific groups of customers: people in search of success in the globalized business environment. The core of such courses is an order of indexicality which stresses uniformity and homogeneity, producing an invisible accent that replaces existing ‘foreign’ (i.e. authentic, biographic) accents. In this article, we examine the hierarchization of international students by bringing together perspectives of linguistic legitimacy and language ideologies. Our data stems from 26 accent reduction (AR) or accent modification (AM) course descriptions and websites from US universities. Based on their analysis, we discuss the socio-political implications of the phenomenon of these courses for international students and the ways in which language-based, particularly accent-based, arguments are used to create or reinforce different categories of students. Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten ranskankieliset suhtautuvat suomalaiseen aksenttiin puheessa. Natiivien suhtautumista vieraskieliseen aksenttiin ja vieraan kielen ääntämisen oppimista ja opetusta on tutkittu aiemminkin, mutta ranskankielisten suhtautumisesta suomalaiseen aksenttiin ranskan kielessä ei ole aiempaa tutkimusta. Tutkimus pyrkii toisaalta näyttämään, miten aksenttiin suhtaudutaan ja toisaalta osoittamaan, ettei kielen täydellinen, natiivinkaltainen, ääntäminen ole välttämätöntä ymmärretyksi tulemisessa. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan sitä, miten thainkielisten suomenoppijoiden (N=10) ensikielen tunnistaminen vaikuttaa Yleisten kielitutkintojen (YKI) suomen arvioijien (N=44) käsityksiin kielitaidosta ja millaisia käsityksiä arvioijilla on thainkielisten suullisesta kielitaidosta. Artikkelin aineisto liittyy Rikkinäistä suomea-hankkeeseen, jossa thainkieliset oli yksi tutkimukseen osallistuneesta ensikielen ryhmittymästä. Artikkelissa määrällisen aineiston avulla tarkastellaan tunnistamista ja arvioinnissa käytettyjen kuuden analyyttisen arviointikriteerin käyttöä. Aikaisempi tutkimus äänenvärin ja fundamenttitaajuuden yhtenäisyydestä on keskittynyt tutkimaan niiden havaitsemista toiminnasta erillisenä prosessina. Viimeaikainen tutkimus on kuitenkin osoittanut, että ihmisen havainto- ja toiminta-alueet ovat yhteenkytkeytyneitä. Tässä työssä tutkittiin äänenvärin ja fundamenttitaajuuden yhtenäisyyttä sensomotorisessa synkronoitumistehtävässä, jolloin niiden yhtenäisyydestä saatiin tietoa osana ihmisen tavoitteellista toimintaa. The paper deals with foreign accent performance in two popular comedy shows in Finnish television. Two different foreign accents of L2 Finnish – Russian and Swedish – were performed by two fictional characters: Svetlana Rönkkö, a Russian-born woman, and Tove Hansson, a Swedish speaking woman coming from the Åland Islands. Our main focus is on the empirical analysis of the phonetic features in these performances. Second language comprehensibility and accentedness are highly complex phenomena, and numerous studies have been conducted to better understand these constructs. However, research has seldom addressed L2 comprehensibility and accentedness in relation to speakers' proficiency in the target language. This study explores L2 English comprehensibility and accentedness across three proficiency levels. The speakers were 60 teenaged Finns, half of them speaking Finnish as their L1 and half speaking Finland-Swedish as their L1.
