Reduction of Interstitial Cells of Cajal (ICC) Associated With Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase (n-NOS) in Patients With Achalasia

2007

The etiology of achalasia is still unknown. The current theories of chronic inflammation leading to autoimmune response with destruction and loss of the inhibitory myenteric ganglion cells enlighten its pathogenesis in a limited way only. Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) have been shown to be involved in nitrergic neurotransmission of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).To investigate the significance of ICC and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (n-NOS) in esophageal wall tissue of patients undergoing surgery for achalasia. In 53 patients with a median age of 45 (6-78) yr undergoing surgery for achalasia, the immunoreactivity of ICC (CD117/c-kit) and n-NOS was assessed. In 42 patients, biopsi…

Image cytometric DNA analysis of mucosal biopsies in patients with primary achalasia.

2006

(P < 0.0001), and 9c- (P = 0.0001) exceeding rate with progredient DNA alterations in the respective order. CONCLUSION: The finding that DNA aneuploidy was identifi ed by image cytometry in esophageal specimens of patients with achalasia, which may be due to specifi c chromosomal alterations presenting as precancerous lesions in 27% of patients, leads us to conclude that image cytometry represents a valuable screening tool. Abstract AIM: To determine DNA aneuploidy in mucosal biopsies of achalasia patients for subsequent rapid diagnosis. METHODS: Biopsies from the middle third of the esophagus were obtained in 15 patients with achalasia. Immunohistochemical staining was carried out with mon…

Transfusional Hemochromatosis: Quantitative Relation of MR Imaging Pituitary Signal Intensity Reduction to Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism

2000

To assess the relationship between magnetic resonance (MR) imaging pituitary signal intensity reduction in patients with transfusional hemochromatosis and the clinical manifestation of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.Pituitary MR imaging at 0.5 T was performed in 38 consecutive patients affected by secondary hemochromatosis and in 20 healthy volunteers. Serum ferritin levels were estimated in the affected population. Twenty (53%) of the 38 patients had hypogonadotropic hypogonadism diagnosed. Pituitary-to-fat signal intensity ratios were calculated from coronal gradient-echo (GRE) T2*-weighted MR images. The relationship between the quantitative reduction of the pituitary-to-fat signal intens…

Feasibility, reproducibility, and reliability for the T*2 iron evaluation at 3 T in comparison with 1.5 T

2012

This study aimed to determine the feasibility, reproducibility, and reliability of the multiecho T * 2 Magnetic resonance imaging technique at 3 T for myocardial and liver iron burden quantification and the relationship between T * 2 values at 3 and 1.5 T. Thirty-eight transfusion-dependent patients and 20 healthy subjects were studied. Cardiac segmental and global T * 2 values were calculated after developing a correction map to compensate the artifactual T * 2 variations. The hepatic T * 2 value was determined over a region of interest. The intraoperator and interoperator reproducibility for T * 2 measurements at 3 T was good. A linear relationship was found between patients' R (1000/T * …

Oxidant and antioxidant status in mothers and their newborns according to birthweight

2008

The aim of this study is to determine the oxidant and antioxidant status in Algerian mothers and their newborns according to birth weight.Subjects for the study were consecutively recruited from Tlemcen hospital. 139 pregnant women and their newborns were included. The plasma total antioxidant activity (ORAC), vitamins A, C, E, hydroperoxides, carbonyl proteins, and erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme activities (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase) were measured on mothers and their newborns. Lipid and lipoprotein parameters were also determined. The results were assessed in accordance with small for gestational age (SGA), appropriate (AGA) and large…

Different Genetic Expression Profiles of Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis-Related Genes in Crohn's Disease.

2018

Background/Aims: Increased oxidative stress and decreased immune cell apoptosis have been reported to be important factors in the pathogenesis of Crohn’s disease (CD). Our aim was to characterize the genetic expression of molecules implicated in the regulation of oxidative stress and apoptosis in peripheral white mononuclear cells of 18 healthy volunteers (controls) and 20 patients at the onset of CD (active CD [aCD]): 10 who achieved remission (inactive CD [iCD]) and 10 who did not present a complete and deep response to treatment (aCD-T). Methods: mRNA expression was measured by the Agena MassARRAY quantitative ge…

Cognitive impairment is related to oxidative stress and chemokine levels in first psychotic episodes.

2011

Abstract Introduction This study measures the levels of various markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in blood samples from first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients, and examines the association between these peripheral biomarkers and cognitive performance at 6 months after treatment. Methods Twenty-eight FEP patients and 28 healthy controls (matched by age, sex and educational level) had blood samples taken at admission for assessment of total antioxidant status, superoxide dismutase (SOD), total glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase, lipid peroxidation, nitrites and the chemokine monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1). A battery of cognitive tests was also app…

The planimetric Grothoff's criteria by cardiac magnetic resonance can improve the specificity of left ventricular non-compaction diagnosis in thalass…

2020

We differentiated the left ventricle non-compaction (LVNC) from hypertrabeculated myocardium due to a negative remodeling in thalassemia intermedia (TI) patients applying linear and planimetric criteria and comparing the cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) findings. CMR images were analyzed in 181 TI patients enrolled in the Myocardial Iron Overload in Thalassemia Network and 27 patients with proved LVNC diagnosis. The CMR diagnostic criteria applied in TI patients were: a modified linear CMR Petersen’s criterion based on a more restrictive ratio of diastolic NC/C > 2.5 at segmental level and the combination of planimetric Grothoff’s criteria (percentage of trabeculated LV myocardial…
