Identification and functional characterization of S-nitrosated proteins from Klebsormidium nitens in response to salt stress
2023
The small gaseous molecule nitric oxide (NO) is well established as a major ubiquitouscomponent of cell signalling. A key signalling mechanism mediating NO effects is Snitrosation, a post-translational modification by which NO can impact the target proteinactivities, subcellular localizations, and capacities to form protein complexes. The identificationof proteins targeted by NO is of major interest in order to elucidate NO functions. Interestingly, land plants lack NO synthase (NOS), which is the main enzyme for NO synthesis in metazoans, while a few algal species possess it, thus raising many interrogations. Therefore, we focused onthe identification of S-nitrosated proteins during salt str…
Dataset: Sexual reproductive phenology of three charophyte species from two Mediterranean brackish shallow ponds
2017
Vulnerability of algae and seagrasses to climate change
2013
Biodiversity is undergoing rapid and worrying changes, partially driven by anthropogenic activities. Human impacts and climate change (e.g. increasing temperature and ocean acidification) represent the most serious threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Aim of this study was to assess, analysing the scientific literature and published data, how climate change can affect algae and seagrasses, evaluating their vulnerability and the possibility to use these organisms as indicators. Algae and seagrasses have a central role for several important ecological processes in aquatic ecosystems, and their loss can lead repercussions for the ecological function. Climate stressors affected ac…
Active Biomonitoring of Heavy Metal Concentrations in Aquatic Environment Using Mosses and Algae
2022
In this paper, we present an analysis of the pollution of surface water and air by the heavy metals: Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in the area of the smelter in Ozimek (Opolskie Voivodeship, Poland). The marine algae Palmaria palmata was exposed in the Mała Panew River, and three species of forest mosses: Pleurozium schreberi, Sphagnum fallax and Dicranum polysetum were also applied. Active biomonitoring was also carried out using P. schreberi mosses to assess air pollution, since the area and the river are influenced by the smelter’s activities. Analytes were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Student’s T-test and Mann–Whitney U test were used to assess th…
Identification of Partner Proteins of the Algae Klebsormidium nitens NO Synthases: Toward a Better Understanding of NO Signaling in Eukaryotic Photos…
2021
In animals, NO is synthesized from L-arginine by three isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzyme. NO production and effects have also been reported in plants but the identification of its sources, especially the enzymatic ones, remains one of the critical issues in the field. NOS-like activities have been reported, although there are no homologs of mammalian NOS in the land plant genomes sequenced so far. However, several NOS homologs have been found in algal genomes and transcriptomes. A first study has characterized a functional NOS in the chlorophyte Ostreococcus tauri and the presence of NOS homologs was later confirmed in a dozen algae. These results raise the questions of the sig…
Metabolic plasticity of mixotrophic algae is key for their persistence in browning environments
2022
The dataset consists of phenotypic and transcriptomic data of Cryptomonas sp. when submitted to different concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), fully phototrophic conditions and glucose supplemented phototrophic conditions. In addition, scripts of processing of transcriptomic data together with input and output files are given. For more detailed description, see the attached documentation.
Blue-green algalike cells associated with the tunic of Ciona intestinalis L.
1980
Certain organisms resembling blue-green algae embedded in the tunic of the solitary ascidian Ciona intestinalis L. are described. Their probable symbiotic role as related to the peculiar habitat of this ascidian is suggested.
Mixotrophy in a Local Strain of Nannochloropsis granulata for Renewable High-Value Biomass Production on the West Coast of Sweden
2022
A local strain of Nannochloropsis granulata (Ng) has been reported as the most productive microalgal strain in terms of both biomass yield and lipid content when cultivated in photobioreactors that simulate the light and temperature conditions during the summer on the west coast of Sweden. To further increase the biomass and the biotechnological potential of this strain in these conditions, mixotrophic growth (i.e., the simultaneous use of photosynthesis and respiration) with glycerol as an external carbon source was investigated in this study and compared with phototrophic growth that made use of air enriched with 1–2% CO2. The addition of either glycerol or CO2-enriched air stimulated the…
Algae and their extracts in medical treatment
2018
Scientific efforts undertaken in recent decades have undoubtedly proven that algae are an inestimable and, what is more, important renewable source of hundreds of chemical compounds characterized by a wide spectrum of biological activity. Polysaccharides, phenolic compounds and their derivatives, pigments, proteins, lipids, and fatty acids are the substances that can be isolated from seaweeds, possessing antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, antilipidemic, antitumor, antidiabetic, anticoagulant, antioxidant, and antiallergic properties, which can be successfully utilized for human needs. The majority of attention has been focused on marine polysaccharides and their application in medicine a…
