‘Dead men walking?’ Party identification in Germany, 1977–2002

Abstract Scholars engaged in the discourse on ‘Parteienverdrossenheit’ claim that a breakdown of party attachments in West Germany occurred during the early 1990s. Employing data from a series of monthly polls that were conducted from 1977 to 2002, this paper demonstrates that the notion of such a rapid decline is wrong. Rather than being swept away by political crises, party identification declines slowly and fairly constantly over time, which is in line with theories of a secular dealignment. The positioning system of the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located 40km off the coast of Toulon in the Mediterranean Sea at a mooring depth of about 2475m, consists of twelve detection lines equipped typically with 25 storeys. Every storey carries three optical modules that detect Cherenkov light induced by charged secondary particles (typically muons) coming from neutrino interactions. As these lines are flexible structures fixed to the sea bed and held taut by a buoy, sea currents cause the lines to move and the storeys to rotate. Sequence evolution, processing, and posttranslational modification of zonadhesin D domains in primates, as inferred from cDNA data

Zonadhesin is a mammalian transmembrane sperm ligand. Precursor zonadhesin essentially consists of MAM (meprin/A5 antigen/mu receptor tyrosine phosphatase) domains, a mucin-like repeat, and D domains (homologous to von Willebrand D). Recent immunovisualization and binding assays indicate that zonadhesin D domains 1–3 bind postacrosomally to the zona pellucida. This feature has attracted considerable interest in the evolution of zonadhesin and its possible biological and biomedical implications. Functional characterization of two melanocortin (MC) receptors in lamprey showing orthology to the MC1 and MC4 receptor subtypes

Abstract Background The melanocortin (MC) receptors have a key role in regulating body weight and pigmentation. They belong to the rhodopsin family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). The purpose of this study was to identify ancestral MC receptors in agnathan, river lamprey. Results We report cloning of two MC receptors from river lamprey. The lamprey receptors, designated MCa and MCb, showed orthology to the MC1 and MC4 receptor subtypes, respectively. The molecular clock analysis suggested that lamprey MC receptor genes were not duplicated recently and diverged from each other more than 400 MYR ago. Survivin orchestrates intracellular pathways during cell division and apoptosis. Its central function as mitotic regulator and inhibitor of cell death has major implications for tumor cell proliferation. Apoptosis is a highly conserved mechanism of cell deletion that destroys redundant, dysfunctional, damaged, and diseased cells. Furthermore, apoptotic cell death is essential during the development of multicellular organisms. However, there are only a few examples where the occurrence of apoptosis has been shown to be a direct prerequisite for developmental processes.
