Nest predation affects breeding site choice, and has been suggested to drive niche segregation and local coexistence of species. Chemical defences often vary within and between populations both in quantity and quality, which is puzzling if prey survival is dependent on the strength of the defence. We investigated the within- and between-population variability in chemical defence of the wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis). The major components of its defences, SBMP (2-sec-butyl-3-methoxypyrazine) and IBMP (2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine), are volatiles that deter bird attacks. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan sitä, miten nukkumista ohjeistettiin 1800-luvun lopun ja 1900-luvun alkukymmenten suomalaisessa terveysvalistuksessa ja mitä hyvän unen avulla tavoiteltiin. Artikkelissa kysytään myös, ketkä nukkumisohjeita laativat, kenelle ne oli suunnattu ja millaisesta ajattelutavasta ne kumpusivat. Unihygienia eli nukkumiseen ja liittyvät ohjeistukset olivat osa kansainvälistä hygienialiikettä, joka oli vahvimmillaan juuri 1800-luvun loppupuolella. Bacterial antibiotic resistance is often a part of mobile genetic elements that move from one bacterium to another. By interfering with the horizontal movement and the maintenance of these elements, it is possible to remove the resistance from the population. Here, we show that a so-called plasmid-dependent bacteriophage causes the initially resistant bacterial population to become susceptible to antibiotics. However, this effect is efficiently countered when the system also contains a predator that feeds on bacteria. Pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastellaan työvaatteita esitteleviä kuvia Osuustukkukaupan tuottamassa valokuva-aineistossa. Kuvat on tallennettu digitaalisessa muodossa kuva-arkistotietokantaan. Keskeinen tutkimuskysymys on, millaisena työtä tekevä ihminen esitetään edistysmielisen Osuustukkukaupan työvaatteita esittelevässä, vuosien 1930 ja 1956 välillä tuotetussa valokuvallisessa aineistossa. Tarkastelussa on se, miten miestä ja naista esitetään aineistossa pukeutumisen ja valokuvan keinoin. Semiotiikan teoria toimii tarkastelun välineenä.
