[reaction: see text] Convergent, stereoselective syntheses of the pharmacologically active, naturally occurring lactones (-)-microcarpalide and (+)-lethaloxin have been achieved from the commercially available, chiral reagents (R)-glycidol, (S,S)-tartaric acid, and d-ribose as the starting materials. These syntheses have further served to establish the hitherto unknown absolute configuration of (+)-lethaloxin and to show its identity with (+)-pinolidoxin.
Evolution of intermolecular contacts with temperature and pressure in bromoethane and iodoethane – a comparative study

At ambient conditions two liquids, bromoethane, C2H5Br (MBE, m.p. 154.6 K) and iodoethane, C2H5I (MIE, m.p. 162.1 K), have been crystallized under both isobaric and isochoric conditions using in situ low-temperature and high-pressure techniques. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, supported by the isothermal compressibility and isobaric differential scanning calorimetry measurements, allowed the monitoring and analysis at low temperature and high pressure of the effects of externally induced changes in MBE and MIE. On the influence of the acid-base character of catalysts on the oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes

Vanadium oxides supported on metal oxide, i.e. Al2O3, MgO and Mg-Al mixed oxide, and V-containing microporous materials (VAPO-5 and MgVAPO-5) have been tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation of C2-C4 alkanes. In all cases, tetrahedral vanadium species (isolated and/or associated) were mainly observed from51V-NMR and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies. The reducibility of V5+-species, determined from the onset-reduction temperature, decreases as follows: VOx/AL > VAPO-5 > MgVAPO-5 =VOx/MG > VOx/MG + AL. Poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA), poly(butylmethacrylate) (PBMA), and poly(decylmethacrylate) (PDMA) are completely miscible with toluene at normal pressure from room temperature up to the boiling point of the solvent. In alkanes (C6 to C10) and 1-pentanol the solubility increases with the length of the side chain of the polymer: PMMA always exhibits a solubility gap within the above temperature range, PBMA shows upper critical solution temperatures (except n-hexane, which is a non-solvent), and PDMA mixes completely with all alkanes under consideration. The preparation procedure for nanoparticles of the water-soluble salts Na2S and ZnSO4, two commonly used reagents to synthesise ZnS nanoparticles, by evaporation of volatile components of salt-containing water-in-oil microemulsions is described. In suitable conditions, the evaporation leads to the formation of dry salt–surfactant composites and to the formation of Na2S or ZnSO4 nanoparticles. Densities of binary mixtures of polar organic solvents with alcohols were measured at 25‡C. The solvents studied were N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, and formamide while alcohols were butanol, pentanol, hexanol, and 1,4-butanediol. Density measurements of hydrocarbons (from pentane to dodecane and some heptane isomers) + N,N-dimethylformamide were also performed. From these data the apparent molar volumes of alcohols and hydrocarbons as functions of concentration were calculated. The standard partial molar volumes were obtained by extrapolation to infinite dilution and are discussed in terms of group contributions.
