The Undesired Other

Over the recent years, the theme of abortion has set in the agenda of many countries. Although the abortion law was already present in France, the US and the UK, in some other countries the law was recently sanctioned just after the 2000s. This chapter deals with the problem of hospitality in the days of terrorism. From different angles, this chapter explores the question of abortion and the ideas of hospitality and multiculturalism, points that modern terrorism has instilled as necessary debates. We hold the thesis that the modern self has serious problems to understand the alterity when it confronts the own desires. The right of legal abortion should be framed as a decline of hospitality,…
Otherwise than quantum
2022
AbstractThe paper focuses on two problems with Alexander Wendt's unification of physical and social ontology on the basis of quantum theory. Firstly, by endowing social phenomena with an ontological foundation in physical reality defined in quantum terms Wendt risks reducing a plurality of worlds as ‘fields of sense’, ordered by their immanent rules, to the physical world ordered by the laws of quantum theory. Secondly, by defining his quantum social science as an ontology Wendt risks excluding from consideration all that which violates ontological laws, yet may still be said to exist or take place: event, potentiality, and alterity. Although the advantages of a scientific ontology are indi…
‘bien entendu’ vs ‘naturellement’: deux façons de désubjectiviser le dire
2011
Our study focuses on how the discourse markers (DM) participate in the construction of discursive alterity. In our approach, the DM builds, for an assertion, a guarantor with its own semantics, which is the semantics of the lexical element constituting the basis of DM. Naturellement and bien entendu build referential value which ”disempowers” the speaker as a guarantor of his words. This desubjectivation is realized differently in each case analyzed, and is determined by the semantic identity of the DM. In this article we analyze how the DM build modulated commitment of the speaker in his role as the guarantor, convened by the semantics of the DM in the ”disresponsibilization” of the speake…
The Images of the Others in Rome (and Geo-Climatic Determinism) (Le Immagini Dell'Altro a Roma (E Il Determinismo Climatico-Ambientale))
2008
In order to explain the anthropic differences of the foreign people, many Roman authors often make use of the well known theory of geo-climatic determinism. Within the frame of this theory Rome becomes the center of the world, i. e., the place of normality, culture, and identity. The Roman identity, however, is not exclusive and is deeply rooted in alterity. In fact, the foundation of Rome, seen as "conluvies convenarum", can always be repeated by means of the conquests of the "Other", who can easily become "identical".
