A new approach to modelling the input-output structure of regional economies using non-survey methods

AbstractThis paper proposes a new approach to the regionalization of national input–output tables where suitable regional data are scarce and analysts are considering using location quotients (LQs). We focus on the FLQ formula, which frequently yields the best results of the pure LQ-based methods, and develop an enhanced way of implementing this approach. We use a modified cross-entropy (MCE) method, along with a regression model, to estimate values of the unknown parameter δ in the FLQ formula, specific to both region and country. Tämän tutkimusraportin tarkoituksena on antaa systemaattinen, toimialaluokitukseen perustuva kuvaus Keski-Pohjanmaasta. Vaikka kaikista osa-alueista ei tutkimusraportissa olekaan tekstiä kovin laajasti, raportti antaa silti toivottavasti yleiskuvan siitä, mistä Keski-Pohjanmaa elää. Samalla päättäjät myös näkevät, minkä verran mistäkin asiasta on saatavissa tietoa ja mistä asioista olisi lisäselvitystarpeita.

Tutkimusraportti antaa systemaattisen, toimialaluokitukseen perustuva erittelyn Keski-Pohjanmaan tehdasteollisuudesta. Tutkimus on jatkoa teokselle Kaipainen, Raiski ja Rosenqvist (1994): Keski-Pohjanmaan elinkeinokuva. Aiempaa tutkimusraporttia on monin tavoin käytetty tässä raportissa hyväksi, vaikka luvut onkin kirjoitettu uusiksi. Katsaus tehdään tällä kertaa pelkästään teollisuudesta, jonka sisällä kiinnostus kohdistuu erityisesti tehdasteollisuuteen. Patterns of inter- and intra-regional differences in human capital and earnings : Evidence from Finland and Sweden 1987–2015

In this paper, we examine the long-term patterns of geographical disparities in human capital and income in Finland and Sweden over the period 1987–2015. Using nationwide longitudinal population register data, we analyze disparities at different spatial scales, between and within functional labor market regions determined by observed travel-to-work patterns. Contrary to the findings from many other developed economies indicating inter-regional divergence in per capita income, we find indications of inter-regional convergence in per capita earnings among the functional labor market regions in both countries after 2000. Tässä selvityksessä on arvioitu, voidaanko aluetaloudellisilla tarkasteluilla selvittää liikenneinfrastruktuurien kehittämiseen sekä liikenteen hinnoitteluun ja sääntelyyn liittyvien toimenpiteiden vaikutuksia yrityksille, kuluttajille ja julkiseen talouteen aluetalouksien tasolla. This dissertation consists of nine empirical studies which seek to broaden understanding of Finnish regional economic structures. These studies are divided between two topics: 1) regional specialization and industrial concentration in Finland, and 2) regional economic impact analysis. The empirical studies are preceded by an introduction, in which the theoretical background, outline and the main results of the thesis are presented. The research on the first topic is guided by the new economic geography literature, from which answers are sought to the location and agglomeration questions addressed in this dissertation. Multi-currency regime and markets in early nineteenth-century Finland

Pre-industrial money supply typically consisted of multiple, often foreign currencies. Standard economic theory implies that this entails welfare loss due to transaction costs imposed by currency exchange. Through a study of novel data on Finnish nineteenth-century parish-level currency conditions, we show that individual currencies had principal areas of circulation, with extensive co-circulation restricted to the boundary regions in between. We show that trade networks, defined here through the regional co-movement of grain prices, proved crucial in determining the currency used.
