Testing and implementing a new approach to estimating interregional output multipliers using input-output data for South Korean regions
2020
Flegg's location quotient (FLQ) is a useful tool for estimating intraregional output multipliers. This paper uses it as one component when estimating interregional multipliers. Using statistical information criteria and official data for 16 South Korean regions, it is found that the best approach is to combine the FLQ with a simple trade model. The paper explains how the proposed procedure can be implemented for both multiple and individual regions, and also how a region-specific value for the unknown parameter δ in the FLQ formula can be determined. Finally, an illustrative case study of one of the regions is carried out.

Do People Follow Jobs of Do Jobs Follow People? : The Case of Finland in an International Context
2016
Traditionally, people are believed to follow jobs; however, a contradictory view that jobs follow people has also gained popularity. In this study, two methods are used to analyze regional growth processes in Finland between 1990 and 2010, and the results are compared with the findings obtained elsewhere. In accordance with the results from many countries, the conventional regional adjustment model shows that people have largely followed jobs in Finland, i.e., that regional growth is demand induced. A closer examination suggests, however, that highly educated people drive regional change in Finland and that economic fluctuations also have an effect. Another approach, based on the Granger ca…

Deconstruction and hermeneutical space as keys to understanding the rural
2020
The purpose of this article is to complement the existing literature on defining the rural by suggesting a novel approach that makes possible a holistic understanding of the rural. The proposed approach is based on deconstruction of the concept of the rural and on hermeneutical philosophy. The current approaches applied in rural studies are evaluated through the lens of holistic understanding, and solutions to the observed problems are discussed. The problems of current rural studies stem from inadequate conceptualization and biased social theory. The conceptual problems can be alleviated, firstly, by understanding the concept of space not only literally but also figuratively. Secondly, the…
