A Stage-Based Approach to Therapy in Parkinson’s Disease

2019

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that features progressive, disabling motor symptoms, such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor. Nevertheless, some non-motor symptoms, including depression, REM sleep behavior disorder, and olfactive impairment, are even earlier features of PD. At later stages, apathy, impulse control disorder, neuropsychiatric disturbances, and cognitive impairment can present, and they often become a heavy burden for both patients and caregivers. Indeed, PD increasingly compromises activities of daily life, even though a high variability in clinical presentation can be observed among people affected. Nowadays, symptomatic drugs and non-phar…

Cutaneous Lymphadenoma Is a Distinct Trichoblastoma-like Lymphoepithelial Tumor With Diffuse Androgen Receptor Immunoreactivity, Notch1 Ligand in Ree…

2021

The term "cutaneous lymphadenoma" was coined in this journal for an unusual lymphoepithelial cutaneous adnexal neoplasm, possibly with immature pilosebaceous differentiation. Some authors further proposed that cutaneous lymphadenoma was an adamantinoid trichoblastoma. However, although a hair follicle differentiation is widely accepted, the fact that this is a lymphoepithelial tumor is not appropriately explained by the trichoblastoma hypothesis. Our goal was to further clarify the phenotypic and genotypic features of cutaneous lymphadenoma in a series of 11 cases. Histologically, a lobular architecture surrounded by a dense fibrous stroma was present in all cases. The lobules were composed…

Combination therapy with amantadine and interferon in naı̈ve patients with chronic hepatitis C: meta-analysis of individual patient data from six cli…

2003

Abstract Background/Aims In chronic hepatitis C, clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of amantadine (AMA) and interferon (INF) compared to INF monotherapy, have produced conflicting results. We performed a meta-analysis of the individual patient's data from previous studies. Methods Nine hundred and seventy-two patients from six European centres were evaluated by means of individual patient meta-analysis, using mixed models with centres and the centre–treatment interaction fitted as random variables. Results At the end of therapy, virological responses were 38.5% (95% CI 34.1–42.8) after INF and AMA, and 29.5% (95% CI 25.5–33.6) after INF alone (P=0.003). Sustained response occurred in 1…

Developments in Amphibian Parental Care Research : History, Present Advances, and Future Perspectives

2020

Despite rising interest among scientists for over two centuries, parental care behavior has not been as thoroughly studied in amphibians as it has in other taxa. The first reports of amphibian parental care date from the early 18th century, when Maria Sibylla Merian went on a field expedition in Suriname and reported frog metamorphs emerging from their mother's dorsal skin. Reports of this and other parental behaviors in amphibians remained descriptive for decades, often as side notes during expeditions with another purpose. However, since the 1980s, experimental approaches have proliferated, providing detailed knowledge about the adaptive value of observed behaviors. Today, we recognize mo…

Chemical Composition of Essential Oils from Athamanta sicula

2008

The genus Athamanta L. (Apiaceae) consists of about nine species, which are distributed mainly in southeastern Europe. Some of the Athamanta species are used in traditional medicine as antiseptics, diuretics, and in the therapy of sclerosis [1]. Phytochemical studies of species from the genus Athamanta report the presence of coumarins [2–5], flavonoids [6], and fatty acids [7]. Athamanta sicula L. is an annual perennial herb, growing to a height of 30 to 100 cm. It occurs in calcareous vertical cliffs 100 meters to 1500 meters above sea level and is widespread in South Italy, particularly in Sicily. In the popular medicine, it is known as “spaccapietre” (rock splitters), and infusions of it…

Aliciklisko alfa-aminoskābju sintēze

2017

Aliciklisko α-aminoskābju sintēze. Stamberga D., zinātniskie vadītāji Dr.chem. Kauss V. un Dr.h.chem., prof. Zicmanis A. Maģistra darbs, 52 lappuses, 36 attēli, 4 tabulas, 48 literatūras avoti.

Behavioural and pharmacological characterization of a novel cannabimimetic adamantane-derived indole, APICA, in C57BL/6J mice

2015

The novel adamantane derivative APICA (N-(adamtan-1-yl)-1-pentyl-1H-indole-3-carboxamide) was recently identified as a cannabimimetic indole of abuse (1, 2). Despite its novel structure, APICA recalls cannabimimetic indoles, such as representative member JWH-018. The emerging abuse problem, together with the paucity of information about the bioactivity of APICA (3) emphasize the need for further evaluation of the in vivo pharmacology of this novel indole-derived compound. In the present study, the effects of APICA (0 - 1 - 3 mg/Kg, i.p.) were tested in C57BL/6J mice, in a battery of tests that are sensitive to the effects of psychoactive cannabinoids, including body temperature; locomotor a…

Effect of vildagliptin compared to glimepiride on postprandial proinsulin processing in the β cell of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

2012

This study compared the effect of Glimepiride versus Vildagliptin on β-cell function and the release of intact proinsulin (PI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients on metformin monotherapy were randomized to add on treatment with Vildagliptin or Glimepiride. A standardized test meal was given at baseline, after 12 and 24 weeks of treatment. Insulin, PI and blood glucose values were measured in the fasting state and postprandial for 300 min. Fasting PI levels significantly decreased in the Vildagliptin group. The area under the curve for the postprandial release of PI decreased during Vildagliptin and increased during Glimepiride treatment. The proinsulin to insulin ratio decl…

Fast detection of water and organic molecules by a change of color in an iron(II) microporous spin-crossover coordination polymer.

2012

Here we present a novel three-dimensional iron(II) spin-crossover porous coordination polymer based on the bis(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)adamantane (tr(2)ad) ligand and the [Au(CN)(2)](-) metalloligand anions with the formula {Fe(3)(tr(2)ad)(4)[Au(CN)(2))](2)}[Au(CN)(2)](4)·G. The sorption/desorption of guest molecules, water, and five/six-membered-ring organic molecules is easily detectable because the guest-free and -loaded frameworks present drastically distinct coloration and spin-state configurations.
