Direct Measurement of Mammographic X-Ray Spectra with a Digital CdTe Detection System

In this work we present a detection system, based on a CdTe detector and an innovative digital pulse processing (DPP) system, for high-rate X-ray spectroscopy in mammography (1–30 keV). The DPP system performs a height and shape analysis of the detector pulses, sampled and digitized by a 14-bit, 100 MHz ADC. We show the results of the characterization of the detection system both at low and high photon counting rates by using monoenergetic X-ray sources and a nonclinical X-ray tube. The detection system exhibits excellent performance up to 830 kcps with an energy resolution of 4.5% FWHM at 22.1 keV. Instrumentation for time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis

Time-of-flight elastic recoil detection is an ion beam based method to analyze the elemental composition of thin film samples at different depths. In order to improve the mass resolution and to enable kinematic correction a position sensitive gas ionization chamber energy detector was constructed. This detector along with pre-existing timing detectors were connected to a modern fully digitizing data acquisition setup. This thesis describes the design of these instruments, including all aspects from the mechanical design of the gas ionization detector to the algorithm and software development of the digitizing acquisition setup. Cosmic rays are high-energy subatomic particles which travel almost at the speed of light all over the space. The shape of the cosmic ray energy spectrum is measured experimentally, but it is not perfectly understood. The slope of the spectrum at high energies is constant up to the knee energy (about 10^15 eV) where the slope steepens. The knee has been tried to be explained by several models which aim to describe the origin and the acceleration mechanisms of the cosmic ray. Abstract Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH) has been the focus of important research in cardioprotection, and it has been associated with several mechanisms. Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia inhibits prolyl hydroxylases (PHD) activity, increasing the stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) and activating crucial adaptative genes. It has been hence suggested that IHH might be a simple intervention, which may offer a thoughtful benefits to patients with acute myocardial infarction and no complications. Excess volatiles supplied by mingling of mafic magma at an andesite arc volcano

We present the results of a study of volcanic gases at Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, which includes the first spectroscopic measurements of the major gas species CO2 and H2S at this volcano using a Multisensor Gas Analyzer System (MultiGAS) sensor. The fluxes of CO2 and H2S were 640.2750 t/d and 84.266 t/d, respectively, during July 2008, during a prolonged eruptive pause. The flux of CO2 is similar to estimates for the entire arc from previous geochemical studies, while the measured H2S flux significantly alters our interpretation of the sulphur budget for this volcano. In this master’s thesis, profile measurements of PTW Semiflex 3D and PTW Semiflex ionisation chambers in addition to IBA MatriXX matrix detector were compared to each other using different measurement set-ups. Open-conduit volcanic systems are typically characterized by unsealed volcanic conduits feeding permanent or quasi-permanent volcanic activity. This persistent activity limits our ability to read changes in the monitored parameters, making the assessment of possible eruptive crises more difficult. We show how an integrated approach to monitoring can solve this problem, opening a new way to data interpretation. Tortella bambergeri (Pottiaceae) in the Iberian Peninsula, with an updated key to Iberian Tortella

Tortella bambergeri (Schimp.) Broth. is reported for the first time from northern and central-eastern Spain in the Iberian Peninsula. Diagnostic characters and differentiation from other closely related Iberian Tortella taxa are discussed. Furthermore, a map of the currently known distribution of T. bambergeri in Spain, illustrations of the species and an updated key to Iberian Tortella are provided.
