The effect of simulated normal and amblyopic higher-order aberrations on visual performance.
2012
Purpose To study the effect of simulated amblyopic and normal higher-order aberrations on visual performance of normal eyes. Methods To assess visual function, an adaptive optics visual simulator was used to compensate volunteers' ocular aberrations and simulate the wavefront aberration patterns found in healthy and amblyopic eyes in 7 healthy individuals. Visual acuity for high (100%), medium (50%), and low (10%) contrast and contrast sensitivity at 10, 20, and 25 cycles per degree (cpd) were measured after simulation of both pattern aberrations. The modulation transfer function and the point spread function were computed based on the aberration data. All measures were taken for 3 and 5.5 …
No Benefit of a Pediatric Screening in Discovering Reduced Visual Acuity in Children: Experiences from a Cross-Sectional Study in Germany
2020
Background: The newly introduced German pediatric screening examination at the end of the third year of life (U7a) incorporates visual function testing in particular
Technical Report: Repeatability of Contrast Sensitivity Test in Children
2020
Contrast sensitivity (CS) in children is not routinely measured in the clinical setting, although CS losses have been found in amblyopic and premature children. Thus simple visual acuity measurements do not completely assess their quality of vision. To evaluate contrast sensitivity in children, a reliable and easy test, sampling the entire spatial frequency range, is necessary. Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the repeatability and normal range of the contrast sensitivity function measured using the Topcon CC-100 instrument, in children aged between 4 and 9 years, for use as a diagnostic tool. Methods Contrast sensitivity was measured in 25 children, 11 boys and 14 girls, with normal or…
Factors influencing myopic shift in children after intraocular lens implantation.
2019
Introduction:Intraocular lenses have always been a controversial topic in pediatric cataract surgery. In the early 1990s in the post-Soviet states of Eastern Europe, intraocular lenses promised an easier full-time correction and amblyopia treatment. Since 1991, ophthalmologists in Latvia have been implanting intraocular lenses in infants. Amount of the postoperative myopic shift and its influencing factors, analyzed in this article, are important indicators of congenital cataract treatment.Materials and methods:A retrospective chart review off 85 children (137 eyes) who underwent foldable posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation at the Clinical University Hospital in Riga, Latvia, fr…
Psychomotor, Psychosocial and Reading Skills in Children with Amblyopia and the Effect of Different Treatments
2020
Amblyopia influences psychomotor and psychosocial skills, although not all studies are unanimous. Different treatments coexist, but the effect on those variables is not clear. This study aims to probe whether children with amblyopia have impairments in these areas and if different optometric treatments reduce them effectively. 50 children, diagnosed with amblyopia, and 33 without amblyopia participated in this study. Eye-hand coordination, psychosocial skills and reading abilities, were measured before and after three months of different treatments (patch, patch and near vision activities and perceptual learning). Results revealed lower scores in eye-hand coordination and some reading issue…
Ocular Refraction at Birth and Its Development During the First Year of Life in a Large Cohort of Babies in a Single Center in Northern Italy
2020
The purpose of this study was to investigate refraction at birth and during the first year of life in a large cohort of babies born in a single center in Northern Italy. We also aimed to analyze refractive errors in relation to the gestational age at birth. An observational ophthalmological assessment was performed within 24 h of birth on 12,427 newborns. Refraction was examined using streak retinoscopy after the administration of tropicamide (1%). Values in the range of between +0.50 ≤ D ≤ +4.00 were defined as physiological refraction at birth. Newborns with refraction values outside of the physiological range were followed up during the first year of life. Comparative analyses were condu…
Eccentric fixation measurements using visuoscopy and Macula Integrity Tester (MIT) in children with amblyopia
2021
The aim of the work was to compare measurements of eccentric fixation in children with amblyopia using two different methods, a traditional visuoscopy and MIT. Monocular fixation was evaluated using visuoscopy and MIT in 16 patients (from 5 to 9 years old). Measurements were started with the better seeing eye to compare the results obtained with the amblyopic eye. All study participants were selected with anisometropic and refractive amblyopia. Visuoscopy is simpler than MIT and less dependent on patient responses, so visioscopy can be used for young children who have not yet acquired verbal skills. Children over the age of 5 can more easily understand the MIT method and get more reliable r…
Kontaktlēcu pielietojums redzes asuma uzlabošanai pacientiem ar anizometropijas ambliopiju
2017
This is perceptual training software using achromatic stimuli with variable contrast and random noise tuned to a particular frequency bandwith. This app has been developed in the context of a study of amblyopia, carried out by professor Rosa Hernández, and is still under testing.
Prevalence of visual impairment and refractive errors in an urban area of Mexico
2019
AIM: To determine the distribution of refractive errors in a school-age population in Quintana Roo (Mexico) in the framework of an international cooperation campaign for the prevention of blindness. METHODS: A sample of 2647 school-age children (ranging from 5 to 14 years old) with a mean age of 9.1±1.9 years old were tested by trained volunteers for distance visual acuity (VA) and refractive errors. The first screening examination included uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and VA with a +2.00 D lens. Inclusion criteria for a second complete cycloplegic eye examination performed by an optometrist were UDVA <20/25 (0.10 logMAR or 0.8 decimal) and/or VA with +2.00 D ≥20/25. RESULTS: A…
