A b s t r ac t Background The efficacy and side-effect profile of ulipristal acetate as compared with those of leuprolide acetate for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids before surgery are unclear. Methods In this double-blind noninferiority trial, we randomly assigned 307 patients with symptomatic fibroids and excessive uterine bleeding to receive 3 months of daily therapy with oral ulipristal acetate (at a dose of either 5 mg or 10 mg) or once-monthly intramuscular injections of leuprolide acetate (at a dose of 3.75 mg). The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of self-reported restrictive eating, current or past eating disorder, and menstrual dysfunction and their relationships with injuries. Furthermore, we aimed to compare these prevalences and associations between younger (aged 15–24) and older (aged 25–45) athletes, between elite and non-elite athletes, and between athletes competing in lean and non-lean sports. The diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescents

In women, the definition of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has become broad and includes several possible phenotypes. Because several features of PCOS may be in evolution in adolescents, we suggest that only firm criteria should be used to make a diagnosis of PCOS during adolescence. Hyperandrogenism, oligomenorrhea, and ovarian morphology change during adolescence and are discussed individually. Adolescents with incomplete criteria for a firm diagnosis of PCOS should be followed up carefully and may be diagnosed at a later time.
Silver-Russell syndrome associated to Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome, diabetes and hirsutism

We report an unusual association of two rare conditions, the Silver-Russell syndrome and the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, with extra endocrine anomalies. A 15-year old Silver-Russell syndrome girl was referred to our Unit because of primary amenorrhea and hirsutism of adrenal origin. A thorough assessment confirmed previous diagnoses and revealed the presence of diabetes, hyperinsulinism and a complete Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome with an ectopic localization of both ovaries. Although initial medical treatment was not unsatisfactory, future medical, psychological and social implications are expected.

Conservative treatment of ectopic pregnancies using a single echo-guided injection of methotrexate into the gestational sac

The authors describe the possibility of the conservative treatment of five early ectopic pregnancies. A single injection of methotrexate into the tubal gestational sac was performed under vaginal ultrasound guidance. In all five cases, a clear ectopic gestational sac could be visualized. The pregnancies dated from the 5th to the 7th week of amenorrhea. Strict ultrasound follow-up following injection showed a gradual reduction in the size of the tubal gestational sac. At the same time, plasma beta-hCG gradually decreased to zero after a maximum time period of 25 days.
