Matt Kish’s “Every Page of Moby-Dick, Illustrated”: A Multimodal Approach

Abstract The purpose of this essay is to address the multimodal nature of Matt Kish’s project Every Page of Moby-Dick, Illustrated, where Herman Melville’s 1851 masterpiece is set as paratext. Particular focus is set on the portrayals of Captain Achab, specifically “Page 153”, “Page 465” and “Page 469”. The basic theoretical framework has been offered by Alice Gibbons’ theorization of multimodal cognitive poetics and Sigrid Norris’ systematization of multimodal (inter)action. Useful insight has been lent by Sharon Cameron’s work on allegories of the body in Melville’s writing. Abstract We investigated the phylogeny and biogeographic history of the Holarctic harvestmen genus Sabacon , which shows an intercontinental disjunct distribution and is presumed to be a relatively old taxon. Molecular phylogenetic relationships of Sabacon were estimated using multiple gene regions and Bayesian inference for a comprehensive Sabacon sample. Molecular clock analyses, using relaxed clock models implemented in BEAST, are applied to date divergence events. Tryptophan quenching as linear sensor for oxygen binding of arthropod hemocyanins.

Oxygen binding of hemocyanins results in an absorption band around 340nm and a strong quenching of the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence. Our study analyses in detail the fluorescence quenching within two hemocyanins, a hexamer (Panulirus interruptus) and a 4 x 6-mer (Eurypelma californicum). Based on the comparison of calculated and measured transfer efficiencies we could show that: (1) For both hemocyanins FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) is exclusively responsible for quenching of the tryptophan fluorescence upon oxygen binding. The respiratory protein of the tarantula Eurypelma californicum is a 4 x 6-meric hemocyanin that binds oxygen with high cooperativity. This requires the existence of different conformations which have been confirmed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Here we present reconstructed 3D-models of the oxy- and deoxy-forms of tarantula hemocyanins, as obtained by fitting small angle X-rays scattering curves on the basis of known X-ray structures and electron microscopy of related hemocyanins. Molecular Pacman: Folding, Inclusion, and X-ray Structures of Tri- and Tetraamino Piperazine Cyclophanes

Reaction of piperazine and 1,3-bis(bromomethyl)-2-nitrobenzene under high-dilution conditions yields cyclic trimeric trinitro, tetrameric tetranitro, and pentameric pentanitro piperazine cyclophanes. Reduction of the nitro groups with SnCl(2) under acidic conditions produces the corresponding triamino and tetraamino piperazine cyclophanes. Abstract Long repeated stretches of d(CCG) and tri-nucleotide are crucial mutations that cause hereditary forms of mental retardation (fragile X-syndrome). Moreover, the alternating (CG) di-nucleotide is one of the candidates for Z-DNA conformation. Solution NMR structure of d(CCGCGG) 2 has been solved and is discussed. The determined NMR solution structure is a distorted highly bent B-DNA conformation with increased flexibility in both terminal residues.
