The use of camera and LiDAR sensors to sense the environment has gained increasing popularity in robotics. Individual sensors, such as cameras and LiDARs, fail to meet the growing challenges in complex autonomous systems. One such scenario is autonomous mooring, where the ship has to …

Remote photoplethysmography device with adaptive illumination for skin microcirculation assessment

2020

Measuring blood perfusion is important in medical care. However, currently available devices to measure blood perfusion are bulky, expensive and not easy-to-use. In this work a compact and portable low-cost prototype device for remote monitoring of palm skin microcirculation has been developed. Presented device consists of precisely controlled near-infrared illuminators (760nm peak wavelength) and video camera. The device with the custom designed software provides stable uniform illumination of curved skin surfaces, using feedback algorithm. Verification tests of this device showed improvements in the quality of skin blood perfusion maps in the case when the feedback system was used.

Robust auto calibration technique for stereo camera

2017

Calibration of the internal and external parameters of a stereo vision camera is a well-known research problem in the computer vision. Usually, to get accurate 3D results the camera should be manually calibrate accurately as well. This paper proposes a robust approach to Auto Calibration stereo camera Without intervention of the user. There are several methods and techniques of calibration that have been proven, in this work we exploiting the geometric constraint, namely, the epipolar geometry. We specifically focuses to use 7 techniques for Features Extraction (SURF, BRISK, FAST, FREAK, MinEigen, MSERF, SIFT), however tries to establish the correspondences between points extracted in stere…

WiseNET - smart camera network interacting with a semantic model

2016

This paper presents an innovative concept for a distributed system that combines a smart camera network with semantic reasoning. The proposed system is context sensitive and combines the information extracted by the smart camera with logic rules and knowledge of what the camera observes, building information and events that may occurred. The proposed system is a justification for the use of smart cameras, and it can improve the classical visual sensor networks (VSN) and enhance the standard computer vision approach. The main application of our system is smart building management, where we specifically focus on increasing the services of the building users.

Do Firms Share the Same Functional Form of Their Growth Rate Distribution? A New Statistical Test

2011

We propose a hypothesis testing procedure to investigate whether the same growth rate distribution is shared by all the firms in a balanced panel or, more generally, whether they share the same functional form for this distribution, without necessarily sharing the same parameters. We apply the test to panels of US and European Union publicly quoted manufacturing firms, both at the sectoral and at the subsectoral NAICS levels. We consider the following null hypotheses about the growth rate distribution of the individual firms: i) an unknown shape common to all firms, with all the firms sharing also the same parameters, or with the firm variance related to its firm size through a scaling rela…

Regeneration After CNS Lesion: Help from the Immune System?

2010

Traumatic injury to the central nervous system (CNS) is followed by an inflammatory response, which is characterized by at least two very distinct phases: First, a short highly controlled burst of acute inflammatory defense and second, a long-term remodeling phase. Similarly, at least one or two phases of T-cell infiltration have been described in CNS trauma models suggesting differential functions of T cells in the acute and remodeling phase. Thus, the role of T cells in CNS trauma is still controversial. Interestingly, vaccine strategies and injections of autoimmune T cells led to both exacerbation of CNS damage after trauma in some models and improvement in others. Here, we suggest that …

Concerning the calculation of the color gamut in a digital camera

2006

Several methods to determine the color gamut of any digital camera are shown. Since an input device is additive, its color triangle was obtained from their spectral sensitivities and it was compared with the theoretical sensors of Ives-Abney-Yule and MacAdam. On the other hand, the RGB digital data of the optimal or MacAdam colors were simulated to transform them into XYZ data according to the colorimetric profile of the digital camera. From this, the MacAdam limits associated to the digital camera are compared with the corresponding ones of the CIE-1931 XYZ standard observer, resulting that our color device has much smaller MacAdam loci than those of the colorimetric standard observer. Tak…

A combined single range and single image device for low-cost measurement of building facade features

2008

The dimensions of building facades and window apertures are usually determined by making direct measurements using tapes and plummets. This approach, however, has a number of drawbacks including the physical risk to which the persons making the measurements are exposed. This paper proposes an indirect approach based on close range photogrammetry that is inexpensive, simple, fast and safe, and which does not require specialist staff or direct ground control measurements. The method is based on taking a picture using a digital camera and measuring the distance to the object using a handheld laser distance meter. Both items of equipment are mounted on a specially designed support that allows t…

Combined Endo- and Exoscopic Semi-robotic Manipulator System for Image Guided Operations

2006

This paper describes the development of a robotic assistance system for image guided operations. To minimize operation time, a multimodal user interface enables freehand robotic manipulation of an extracorporeal stereoscopic digital camera (exoscope) and an endoscope. The surgeon thereby wears a head-mounted unit with a binocular display, a head tracker, a microphone and earphones. Different view positioning and adjustment modes can be selected by voice and controlled by head rotation while pressing a miniature confirmation button with a finger. Initial studies focused on the evaluation and optimization of the intuitiveness, comfort and precision of different modes of operation, including a…
