This Master’s thesis of general history focuses on the social interaction between ethnic Finns and Native Americans in North America c. 1850—1950. The research aims to cover the nature of the interaction phenomenon in question as well as the social statuses of both groups and the attitudes expressed by them concerning the other. The analysis is based on biographical source material supported by documents, interviews and academic literature emphasizing both the Finns and the Native Americans who were in contact with each other during the aforementioned era. Suomalaisten maahanmuutto Pohjois-Amerikkaan jakautuu useaan eri vaiheeseen. Köyhistä agraarioloista tulleet suomalaiset olivat kovia tekemään työtä ja asettuivat usein seuduille, jotka tarjosivat heille tuttua työtä, esimerkiksi maanviljelyksen ja metsätyön parissa. Näille alueille muodostui merkkittäviä suomalaiskeskittymiä, jotka mahdollistivat suomalaisen kulttuuriperimän säilymisen vuosikymmeniä. Finns and the Indigenous People in the Great Lakes Region: Playing with Settler Myths in Late 20th- and Early 21st-Century Finnish American Fiction

This chapter explores the Finnish settler migration mythology through a selection of Finnish–American literature produced in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The idea is to shed light on the ways in which these texts create, spread, and perpetuate the settler myths. A close reading of literary texts can offer the opportunity to refocus, reframe, and reconceptualize Finnish experiences in North America. The chapter demonstrates that these texts can be approached as reinforcing the Finnish–Indigenous myth.
