A European survey of management approaches in chronic urticaria in children: EAACI Paediatric Urticaria Taskforce

2021

Background: Although well described in adults, there are scarce and heterogeneous data on the diagnosis and management of chronic urticaria (CU) in children (0-18 years) throughout Europe. Our aim was to explore country differences and identify the extent to which the EAACI/GA²LEN/EDF/WAO guideline recommendations for paediatric urticaria are implemented. Methods: The EAACI Taskforce for paediatric CU disseminated an online clinical survey among EAACI paediatric section members. Members were asked to answer 35 multiple choice questions on current practices in their respective centres. Results: The survey was sent to 2,773 physicians of whom 358 (13.8%) responded, mainly paediatric allergist…

Polar Bear in 'Fortitude'. Affective Aesthetics and Politics of Climate Change

2021

In the first season of the television Eco Noir crime series “Fortitude” (2015) the polar bear appears as a sticky object that embodies an ambiguous affective charge as an icon of global warming. This article discusses the ways in which the polar bear evokes viewer affect in the series through two discourses. The first one relates to violence, essentially present in crime narratives, and how the human and nonhuman animal are positioned in relation to global warming, violence and each other. It raises questions of place and belonging in a local and global context and examines how the polar bear is constructed in terms of stranger danger and victimization in relation to human animals and the t…

Unit study in cat claustrum of the effects of iontophoretic neurotransmitters and correlations with the effects of activation of some afferent pathwa…

1982

Glutamate (Glut), acetylcholine (ACh) and dopamine (DA) were iontophoretically applied on cat claustral neurons. Glut did not affect all the neurons; ACh had both excitatory and inhibitory effects, while DA was prevalently inhibitory. An analysis was made of the time-course of excitatory and inhibitory responses on the basis of the mean firing rate variations during and after ACh and DA release. Three types of responses are described for each drug: short lasting inhibition, long lasting inhibition and long lasting excitation. The experimental data were statistically elaborated. The effects of ACh and of DA were compared with those of activation obtained by sensorial peripheric and thalamic …

Cytogenetic effects of promutagens in genetically engineered V79 Chinese hamster cells expressing cytochromes P450.

1993

Abstract V79 Chinese hamster cell lines genetically engineered to express rat CYP2B1, CYP1A1, CYP1A2, and their parental cell lines V79-MZ, without acetyltransferase, and V79-NH, with acetyltransferase, were studied for chromosome aberrations and sister chromatid exchange induced by aflatoxin B 1 , cyclophosphamide, benzo[a]pyrene, 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene and dimethylnitrosamine. The parental V79 cell lines did not show clastogenic effects. Significant clastogenic effects were observed after an 18 h exposure to aflatoxin B 1 and cyclophosphamide in CYP2B1 expressing cells, to benzo[a]pyrene in CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 expressing cells, to 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene and dimethylnitrosami…

Afrikkalaisesta nykytaiteesta kirjoittamisen haasteet. Näyttelyluetteloiden risteävät diskurssit

2015

Supramolecular systems based on gold(I) derivatives : molecular recognition of L-glutamine and polyQ

2017

Muodostunut isäntä-vieras -kompleksi tuottaa erilaisen emission vierasmolekyylistä riippuen. Lisäksi [Au(4-etynyylianiliini)(PTA)]:n itsejärjestäytymisen termodynaamisia funktioita tutkittiin eri pitoisuuksissa ja lämpötiloissa NMR mittausten avulla. Nämä lineaariset kulta(I) -…

A53T-Alpha-Synuclein Overexpression Impairs Dopamine Signaling and Striatal Synaptic Plasticity in Old Mice

2010

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most frequent neurodegenerative disorder at old age, can be caused by elevated expression or the A53T missense mutation of the presynaptic protein alpha-synuclein (SNCA). PD is characterized pathologically by the preferential vulnerability of the dopaminergic nigrostriatal projection neurons. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we used two mouse lines overexpressing human A53T-SNCA and studied striatal dysfunction in the absence of neurodegeneration to understand early disease mechanisms. To characterize the progression, we employed young adult as well as old mice. Analysis of striatal neurotransmitter content demonstrated that dopamine (DA…

Prescription-grade crystalline glucosamine sulfate as an add-on therapy to conventional treatments in erosive osteoarthritis of the hand: results fro…

2022

Abstract Objective To evaluate the efficacy of prescription-grade Crystalline Glucosamine Sulfate (pCGS) as an add-on treatment to conventional therapy, compared to usual therapy alone, in patients with erosive osteoarthritis of the hand (EHOA). Methods This 6-month retrospective case–control study included patients with concomitant knee osteoarthritis and symptomatic EHOA. Participants were stratified into two groups based on whether or not pCGS (1500 mg/day) was added to the conventional therapy (education and training in ergonomic principles, exercise and use on-demand of symptomatic drugs) for hand osteoarthritis. Patients were evaluated at baseline, after 3 and 6 months. Primary outcom…

Hormonal regulation of S-adenosylmethionine synthase transcripts in pea ovaries

1996

Two cDNA clones coding for S-adenosyl-L-methionine synthase (SAMs, EC 2.5.1.6) have been isolated from a cDNA library of gibberellic acid-treated unpollinated pea ovaries. Both cDNAs were sequenced showing a high degree of identity but coding for different SAMs polypeptides. The presence of two SAMs genes in pea was further confirmed by Southern analysis. Expression of the SAMs genes in the pea plant was found at different levels in vegetative and reproductive tissues. We characterized the expression levels of SAMs genes during the development or senescence of pea ovaries. Northern analysis showed that transcription of SAMs genes in parthenocarpic fruits was upregulated by auxins in the sam…
