Micellar-organic versus aqueous-organic mobile phases for the screening of β-blockers
2002
A comparative study of the performance of reversed-phase liquid chromatography with micellar-organic (MLC) and aqueous-organic (RPLC) mobile phases is reported for the separation of 16 -blockers (acebutolol, alprenolol, atenolol, bisoprolol, carteolol, celiprolol, esmolol, labetalol, metoprolol, nadolol, oxprenolol, pindolol, practolol, propranolol, sotalol, and timolol). MLC with hybrid mobile phases of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and propanol is revealed as a very competitive technique for the screening of these drugs. Using a conventional Spherisorb C18 column, the theoretical plates ( N) and asymmetry factors (B/A) for the optimal mobile phase compositions were in the ranges N = 2200–4…
Solid phase extraction of amines
2005
Abstract The objective of this paper is to provide information about solid phase extraction (SPE) as an alternative to liquid–liquid extraction of amines from several matrices. Different sorbents ranging from non-polar phases, such as C 18 silica to more polar such as cyanopropylsilica (CN) have been tested for analysis of aliphatic amines as monoamines, diamines and polyamines. Phenylalkylamines such as amphetamine or methamphetamine and heterocyclic amines such as histamine or cephalosporins (which also contain a carboxylic group), have also been studied. The different steps involved in the extraction procedure have been tested (conditioning, retention, pre-concentration, washing and elut…

Abstract A capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method for analyzing 11 chelating agents [β-alaninediacetic acid (β-ADA), trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane- N , N , N ′, N ′-tetraacetic acid (CDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), N -(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine- N , N ′, N ′-triacetic acid (HEDTA), N -(2-hydroxyethyl)iminodiacetic acid (HEIDA), iminodiacetic acid (IDA), methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), 1,3-diaminopropane- N , N , N ′, N ′-tetraacetic acid (PDTA) and triethylenetetraaminehexaacetic acid (TTHA)] as negatively charged copper(II) complexes has been established. Both conventional and alternative che…
A microscale Kjeldahl nitrogen determination for environmental waters.
2008
A microscale Kjeldahl system has been designed which has been homemade reduced. The digestor unit of a macroKjeldahl system and a modified glassware microdistillation unit have been used. The optimal conditions for digestion and distillation have been established for ammonium and methylamine as model compound of organic amino nitrogen. The optimised procedure has been applied to the determination of Kjeldahl nitrogen in water samples. Recoveries near 100% and good precision have been achieved. This procedure combines nitrogen miniaturized system and the use of a selective ion electrode for ammonia detection. The analysis time was reduced 4.8 times and the analysis cost 6.6 times compared wi…
Detector supports: application to aliphatic amines in wastewater
2005
Abstract Solid support assisted derivatization coupled to diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) was proposed and proved useful for the detection and quantification of aliphatic amines in water as an example. Dabsyl chloride (DBS), ninhydrin and sodium 1,2-naphtoquinone 4-sulphonate (NQS) were assayed as derivatization reagents. C 18 and SDB-XC disks and C 18 cartridges were tested for amine retention and after that derivatization. The decrease of the orange colour of dabsyl chloride on SBD-XC disks produced by the formation of its derivative with methylamine in the support (10 min at 100 °C) allowed the selective determination of the amine at concentration level equal or higher than 0.5 mg…
Characterization of antihistamine–human serum protein interactions by capillary electrophoresis
2007
An important topic in the drug discovery and development process is the role of drug binding to plasma proteins. In this paper the characterization of the interaction between antihistamines (cationic drugs) towards human serum albumin (HSA) and alpha(1)-acid glycoprotein (AGP) under physiological conditions by capillary electrophoresis-frontal analysis is presented. Furthermore, the binding of these drugs to all plasma proteins is evaluated by using ultrafiltration and capillary electrophoresis. Antihistamines present a wide-ranging behaviour with respect to their affinities towards plasma proteins. Orphenadrine, phenindamine, tripelenamine and tripolidine principally bind to HSA; carbinoxa…
Target analysis of primary aromatic amines combined with a comprehensive screening of migrating substances in kitchen utensils by liquid chromatograp…
2015
An analytical strategy including both the quantitative target analysis of 8 regulated primary aromatic amines (PAAs), as well as a comprehensive post-run target screening of 77 migrating substances, was developed for nylon utensils, using liquid chromatography-orbitrap-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) operating in full scan mode. The accurate mass data were acquired with a resolving power of 50,000 FWHM (scan speed, 2 Hz), and by alternating two acquisition events, ESI+ with and without fragmentation. The target method was validated after statistical optimization of the main ionization and fragmentation parameters. The quantitative method presented appropriate performance to be u…
Colorimetric determination of arylamines and sulphonamides by diazotization and coupling in a micellar solution
1989
Abstract The use of a micellar solution as a means for improving the colorimetric determination of arylamines by diazotization and coupling is studied. Sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), Triton X-100 (TX-100) and N -cetylpyridinium chloride (NCPC), together with the diazotizable substances aniline and sulphanilic acid and the coupling agents 1-naphthylamine and N -(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine are used as model compounds. The protonation constants of the dyes follow the order SDS>H 2 O>TX-100>NCPC. In an SDS micellar solution the coupling rate increases greatly, allowing the rapid formation of the protonated dyes in an acetate buffer. Other advantages are the possibility of analysing very non-pola…
Determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma samples by micellar liquid chromatography and direct injection of sample
2001
A liquid chromatographic procedure is proposed for the determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma samples with direct injection. The method uses a Spherisorb octadecylsilane ODS-2 C18 analytical column and a micellar mobile phase containing 0.15 M sodium dodecyl sulphate, 0.5% triethylamine at pH 2.5 and 10% propanol. The UV detection was carried out at 300 nm. Plasma sample preparation required only adequate dilution with the mobile phase before injection into the chromatographic system. The proposed method allows the determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma at therapeutic levels.
