Expression of pyruvate kinase M2 in preneoplastic hepatic foci of N-nitrosomorpholine-treated rats.

1999

The expression of the pyruvate kinase (PK) isoenzymes L and M2 was analysed in the livers of rats treated with the hepatocarcinogenic agent N-nitrosomorpholine (NNM) in the drinking water. In control animals L-PK expression was restricted to liver parenchymal cells, whereas M2-PK was detected in bile duct epithelial, blood vessel wall, endothelial and Kupffer cells. In rats treated with NNM proliferating oval cells were consistently L-PK negative and M2-PK positive, while the ductal cells of cholangiofibroses were clearly L-PK positive and coexpressed M2-PK. However, no morphological differentiation of ductal cells into hepatocyte-like cells was observed. In the clear and acidophilic cell f…

Physical training and connective tissues in young mice. Biochemistry of skin.

1976

The effect of physical training on some connective tissue components of the skin was studied in male mice of NMRI-strain. The mice to be trained and their controls were about 2-weeks-old at the beginning of the training, which took place on a 5 degree inclined treadmill 5 days a week for 3-22 weeks progressively. The final exercise bouts were 50 and 80 min for moderate programmes and 180 min for the intensive programme at a speed of 30 cm/s. At the end of each experiment skin samples from trained and control animals were taken for the analyses. We found increased concentrations of nitrogen, hexosamines and hydroxyproline in the skin of the trained mice compared to the controls. The unchange…

Ante-, peri- and postnatal factors associated with intraventricular hemorrhage in very premature infants.

2017

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is one of the most serious complications in preterm infants and is associated with neurological sequelae and mortality. Over the past few decades, the rate of IVH has decreased due to improved neonatal intensive care. However, up to 15-25% of very and extremely premature infants (32 and28weeks of pregnancy (WOP) respectively) still suffer from IVH.The aim of this study was to perform an updated, multicenter analysis to identify ante-, peri, and postnatal factors other than gestational age/birth weight associated with IVH of any grade in a large cohort of very and extremely premature infants. We performed a retrospective analysis in a prospectively conducted …

Noradrenaline depleting and blood pressure lowering activity of threo-corbadrine

1968

Abstract Threo-corbadrine caused a long-lasting depletion of noradrenaline in the heart and in mesenteric vessels and lowered the blood pressure of normal and renal hypertensive rats. It is suggested that threo-cobadrine decreases vascular tone by acting peripherally as a substitute adrenergic transmitter.

Polyhydroxyethylaspartamide-based micelles for ocular drug delivery

2009

In this paper three copolymers of polyhydroxyethylaspartamide (PHEA), bearing in the side chains polyethylene glycol (PEG) and/or hexadecylamine (C(16)) (PHEA-PEG, PHEA-PEG-C(16) and PHEA-C(16) respectively) have been studied as potential colloidal drug carriers for ocular drug delivery. The physical characterization of all three PHEA derivatives, using the Langmuir trough (LT) and micellar affinity capillary electrophoresis (MACE) techniques allowed to assume that whereas alone PHEA backbone is an inert polymer with respect to the interactions with lipid membranes and drug complexation, when PHEA chains are grafted with long alkyl chains like C(16) or in combination C(16) chains and hydrop…

Efficacy and safety of once-daily QVA149 compared with the free combination of once-daily tiotropium plus twice-daily formoterol in patients with mod…

2015

Background QVA149 is a once-daily (o.d.) inhaled dual bronchodilator containing a fixed-dose combination of the long-acting β2-agonist indacaterol and the long-acting muscarinic antagonist glycopyrronium for the treatment of COPD. The QUANTIFY study compared QVA149 with a free-dose bronchodilator combination of tiotropium plus formoterol (TIO+FOR) in improving health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with COPD. Methods This multicentre, blinded, triple-dummy, parallel-group, non-inferiority study randomised patients aged ≥40 years with moderate-to-severe COPD (post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) ≥30% to <80% predicted) to QVA149 110/50 µg o.d. or TIO 18 µg o…

Risk stratification of normotensive pulmonary embolism: prognostic impact of copeptin

2015

The prognostic value of copeptin, the C-terminal fragment of the precursor protein of vasopressin which is released upon stress, and hypotension in pulmonary embolism is unknown, especially if combined with biomarkers reflecting different pathophysiological axes such as myocardial injury (high-sensitivity troponin T (hsTnT)) and stretch (N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP)).We prospectively studied 268 normotensive pulmonary embolism patients included in a single-centre cohort study.Patients with an adverse 30-day outcome (5.6%) had higher copeptin levels than patients with a favourable course (median (interquartile range) 51.8 (21.6–90.8) versus 13.2 (5.9–39.3) pmol·L−1; p…

Physical and cognitive doping in university students using the unrelated question model (UQM): Assessing the influence of the probability of receivin…

2018

Study objectives: In order to increase the value of randomized response techniques (RRTs) as tools for studying sensitive issues, the present study investigated whether the prevalence estimate for a sensitive item π̂$_{s}$ assessed with the unrelated questionnaire method (UQM) is influenced by changing the probability of receiving the sensitive question p. Material and methods: A short paper-and-pencil questionnaire was distributed to 1.243 university students assessing the 12-month prevalence of physical and cognitive doping using two versions of the UQM with different probabilities for receiving the sensitive question (p ≈ 1/3 and p ≈ 2/3). Likelihood ratio tests were used to assess wheth…

The first report of the Italian Migraine Registry (I-GRAINE).

2022

Italian Migraine Registry (I-GRAINE) is a multicenter (n = 38), prospective, observational, non-interventional study aimed at providing big data on migraine to ensure proper clinical disease management, according to scientific, and sustainability criteria. We enrolled consecutive patients affected by episodic or chronic migraine according to the systematic random method. Information on sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, migraine features, patient's journey, and healthcare resource use were gathered using face-to-face interviews. On the date of 31 December 2021, we enrolled 231 patients at 12 headache centers. Most of them were women (84.4%), with high migraine frequency (9.6 +/- 6.…

Acute behavioural and neurotoxic effects of MDMA plus cocaine in adolescent mice.

2008

The poly-drug pattern is the most common among those observed in MDMA users, with cocaine being a frequently associated drug. This study evaluates the acute effects of MDMA (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg), alone or in combination with cocaine (25 mg/kg), on motor activity, anxiety (elevated plus maze and social interaction test), memory and brain monoamines in adolescent mice, Both drugs, administered alone or concurrently, produced hyperactivity and a decrease in social contacts. However, an anxiolytic effect, studied by means of the elevated plus maze and expressed as an increase in the time spent on the open arms, was observed only in those animals treated with cocaine and MDMA. The passive avoidan…
