Performances of a granular sequencing batch reactor (GSBR).

2007

Aerobic granulation in sequencing batch reactors is widely reported in literature and in particular in SBAR (Sequencing batch airlift reactor) configuration, due to the high localised hydrodynamic shear forces that occur in this type of configuration. The aim of this work was to observe the phenomenon of the aerobic granulation and to confirm the excellent removal efficiencies that can be achieved with this technology. In order to do that, a laboratory-scale plant, inoculated with activated sludge collected from a conventional WWTP, was operated for 64 days: 42 days as a SBAR and 22 days as a SBBC (sequencing batch bubble column). The performances of the pilot plant showed excellent organic…

Internal leachate quality in a municipal solid waste landfill: Vertical, horizontal and temporal variation and impacts of leachate recirculation

2008

The aim of this study was to monitor and characterise internal leachate quality at a Finnish municipal solid waste landfill (Lahti, Kujala, in operation for approximately 50 years) to provide information about its horizontal and vertical variation as well as effects of leachate recirculation on leachate quality. The study area (approximately 4h) of the landfill had 14 monitoring wells for leachate quality monitoring over a 2-year period. The leachate was monitored for COD, BOD, TKN, NH4-N, Cl, pH and electric conductivity. The results showed high horizontal and vertical variability in leachate quality between monitoring wells, indicating that age and properties of waste, local conditions (e…

A parsimonious dynamic model for river water quality assessment

2010

Water quality modelling is of crucial importance for the assessment of physical, chemical, and biological changes in water bodies. Mathematical approaches to water modelling have become more prevalent over recent years. Different model types ranging from detailed physical models to simplified conceptual models are available. Actually, a possible middle ground between detailed and simplified models may be parsimonious models that represent the simplest approach that fits the application. The appropriate modelling approach depends on the research goal as well as on data available for correct model application. When there is inadequate data, it is mandatory to focus on a simple river water qua…

Precipitation assessment in wastewater treatment plants operated for biological nutrient removal: a case study in Murcia, Spain.

2009

The Murcia Este Wastewater Treatment Plant is the largest wastewater treatment plant in Murcia (Spain). The plant operators have continuously found pipe blockage and accumulation of solids on equipment surfaces during the anaerobic digestion and post-digestion processes. This work studies the precipitation problems in the Murcia Este Wastewater Treatment Plant in order to locate the sources of precipitation and its causes from an exhaustive mass balance analysis. The DAF thickener and anaerobic digester mass balances suggest that most of the polyphosphate is released during excess sludge thickening. Despite the high concentrations achieved in the thickened sludge, precipitation does not occ…

Struvite formation from the supernatants of an anaerobic digestion pilot plant

2009

This work studied the influence of the characteristics of the supernatants on the struvite precipitation process. Eighteen experiments with the supernatants generated in an anaerobic digestion pilot plant were performed in a stirred reactor. In order to obtain the pH control during the crystallization process, a Fuzzy Logic based controller was used. High phosphorus precipitation and recovery efficiencies were obtained. The composition of the supernatants was analyzed in order to study its influence on the solids formed from those solutions. The presence of calcium reduced the percentage of phosphorus precipitated as struvite leading to the formation of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), wh…

Hybrid activated sludge/biofilm process for the treatment of municipal wastewater in a cold climate region: a case study.

2011

A hybrid activated sludge/biofilm process was investigated for wastewater treatment in a cold climate region. This process, which contains both suspended biomass and biofilm, usually referred as IFAS process, is created by introducing plastic elements as biofilm carrier media into a conventional activated sludge reactor. In the present study, a hybrid process, composed of an activated sludge and a moving bed biofilm reactor was used. The aim of this paper has been to investigate the performances of a hybrid process, and in particular to gain insight the nitrification process, when operated at relatively low MLSS SRT and low temperatures. The results of a pilot-scale study carried out at the…

Ethylene and phenylene bridged polysilsesquioxanes functionalized by amine and thiol groups as adsorbents of volatile organic compounds

2007

Abstract Ethylene and phenylene bridged polysilsesquioxane xerogels having amine and thiol groups attached to the surface have been obtained by the sol–gel method from 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane or 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene and functionalized silanes in the presence of an ammonium fluoride catalyst in an ethanol solution. The synthesized samples have a porous structure (700–850 m2/g) and a high content of functional groups (1.4–1.9 mmol/g). The obtained porous bridged polysilsesquioxanes exhibit a considerable affinity for adsorbing several organic compounds (n-hexane, n-heptane, benzene, cyclohexane, acetonitrile and triethylamine) from the gas phase. The sample with an ethylene br…

Aircraft-based operation of an aerosol mass spectrometer: Measurements of tropospheric aerosol composition

2006

The Aerodyne quadrupole aerosol mass spectrometer was deployed on the Falcon twin jet research aircraft operated by Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). This was the first deployment of an AMS in a jet aircraft. Aerosol mass concentration measurements in the troposphere up to altitudes of about 11 km were performed within two measurement flights on 12 and 14 May 2003 over southern Germany. Background aerosol data were gained up to 6 km, while aircraft exhaust aerosol was be sampled at higher altitudes on 14 May, indicating the presence of sulfuric acid and unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust particles. The boundary layer aerosol on 12 May was found to be composed of 49% organic…

Analysis of 18 perfluorinated compounds in river waters: Comparison of high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, ultra-high-pe…

2012

In this work, the performance of ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) and capillary liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (CLC-MS) has been studied for the analysis of eighteen perfluorinated compounds in water samples. UHPLC-MS/MS and CLC-MS analysis were carried out using a Zorbax C-18 column (50 mm × 2.1 mm, 1.8 μm) and a Zorbax SB-C18 column (150 mm × 0.5 mm, 3.5 μm), respectively, in gradient elution mode with a mobile phase of ammonium formate and methanol. Both techniques were compared with conventional LC-MS/MS in terms of speed, sensitivity, selectivity and resolution. Water samples were extracted by solid phase extraction (SPE). Mea…

Synthesis, characterization and thermal properties of new aromatic quaternary ammonium bromides

2004

Series of new aromatic R 2R′ 2N +Br - (R=benzyl, 4-methylbenzyl, 2-phenylethyl, 3-phenylpropyl; R′=ethyl, methyl, isopropyl) or RR′ 2NH +Br --type (R=benzyl, R′=isopropyl) quaternary ammonium bromides were prepared by using novel synthetic route in which a formamide (N,N-diethylformamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-diisopropylformamide) is treated with aralkyl halide in presence of a weak base. The compounds were characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Structures of the crystalline compounds were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction, and in addition the powder diffraction method was used to study the structural similarities between the single crysta…
