Differential scanning calorimetric and Raman studies of phase transition V ⇌ IV of ammonium nitrate

Abstract Differential scanning calorimetry, alone and in conjunction with Raman spectrophotometry for simultaneous calorimetric and spectral measurements, was used to study the solid state phase transitions of ammonium nitrate between − 50 and 100 °C. On heating, two transition paths were observed between − 40 and 0 °C: one showing two separate peaks in DSC and the other showing a single peak. The latter path became dominant when samples were thermally cycled. The double transition was followed by transition IV →II at 51 °C and the single transition by transitions IV → III → II at about 50 and 87 °C. Red Shift in the Light Absorption Threshold of Anodic TiO2 Films Induced by Nitrogen Incorporation

Abstract Titanium foils were anodized in ammonium containing and ammonium free solutions in order to check the possibility of inducing nitrogen incorporation into anodic TiO 2 films. XPS spectra confirmed the presence of O-Ti-N bonds on the surface of the anodic films prepared in ammonium biborate electrolytes. In order to evidence the effect of nitrogen incorporation on the light absorption threshold, photoelectrochemical behavior of as-anodized and high temperature annealed films as a function of the anodizing electrolyte composition were investigated. Improvement of the LET sensitivity in ESR dosimetry for -photons and thermal neutrons through gadolinium addition

Abstract We investigated the ESR response of new materials, alanine and ammonium tartrate to which gadolinium was added. The addition of gadolinium enhances sensitivity for Co 60 γ -photons because of its high atomic number ( Z = 64 ) and an enhancement of sensitivity for thermal neutrons because of its high thermal neutron cross section and high linear energy transfer (LET) secondary particles produced after the reaction with neutrons. Three homofermentative ( Lactobacillus plantarum B38, L. plantarum B33, Pediococcus pentosaceus B30) and three heterofermentative ( Leuconostoc mesenteroides 39, L. oenos B70, Lactobacillus brevis ) lactic acid bacteria were examined for the presence or absence of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent and NAD-independent d - and l -lactate dehydrogenases. Two of the six strains investigated, P. pentosaceus and L. oenos , did not exhibit an NAD-independent enzyme activity capable of reducing dichlorophenol indophenol. Physostigmine and Neuromuscular Transmission

Single channel studies carried out in cultured rat myoballs and cultured hippocampal neurons, and ion flux studies performed on Torpedo electrocyte membrane vesicles, showed that physostigmine (Phy), a well-established acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, interacts directly with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR). Low concentrations (0.1 microM) of Phy activate the receptor integral channel, whereas higher concentrations blocked the channel in its opened state. In contrast to channel activation by acetylcholine (ACh) and classical cholinergic agonists, however, Phy was capable of activating the nAChR channel even when the ACh binding sites were blocked by competitive antagonists, such as …

N-Alkyl Ammonium Resorcinarene Salts as High-Affinity Tetravalent Chloride Receptors.

N-Alkyl ammonium resorcinarene salts (NARYs, Y=triflate, picrate, nitrate, trifluoroacetates and NARBr) as tetravalent receptors, are shown to have a strong affinity for chlorides. The high affinity for chlorides was confirmed from a multitude of exchange experiments in solution (NMR and UV/Vis), gas phase (mass spectrometry), and solid-state (X-ray crystallography). A new tetra-iodide resorcinarene salt (NARI) was isolated and fully characterized from exchange experiments in the solid-state. Abstract A theoretical model has been formulated which allows the processes which control the wet deposition of atmospheric aerosol particles and pollutant gases to be included in cloud dynamic models. The cloud considered in the model was allowed to grow by condensation and collision–coalescence, to remove aerosol particles by nucleation and impaction scavenging, and to remove pollutant gases by convective diffusion. The model was tested by using a simple air-parcel model as the dynamic framework. Abstract Laboratory experiments were conducted in the Mainz vertical wind tunnel to study the effects of pollutants dissolved or suspended in cloud droplets on the droplet size measurements of a Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP). The FSSP is a widely used instrument to derive microphysical properties of atmospheric clouds. Individual droplets of different well-defined sizes were freely falling at their terminal velocities in the wind tunnel while the intensity of radiation emitted by the He–Ne laser of the FSSP and scattered by the droplets was measured.
