A strike-slip core complex from the Najd fault system, Arabian shield

2014

Metamorphic core complexes are usually thought to be associated with regional crustal extension and crustal thinning, where deep crustal material is exhumed along gently dipping normal shear zones oblique to the regional extension direction. We present a new mechanism whereby metamorphic core complexes can be exhumed along crustal-scale strike-slip fault systems that accommodated crustal shortening. The Qazaz metamorphic dome in Saudi Arabia was exhumed along a gently dipping jog in a crustal-scale vertical strike-slip fault zone that caused more than 25 km of exhumation of lower crustal rocks by 30 km of lateral motion. Subsequently, the complex was transected by a branch of the strike-sli…

Petrology, geochronology, and tectonic implications of c . 500 Ma metamorphic and igneous rocks along the northern margin of the Central Asian Orogen…

2008

A significant portion of the continental crust of northern Eurasia is thought to have formed during the evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt at the time of accretion of continental terranes and island arcs. Records of this event are well preserved within the Siberian craton–Central Asian Orogenic Belt transition zone in Lake Baikal region, particularly in the Olkhon terrane. Our results establish granulite-facies conditions for peak metamorphism in the Olkhon terrane, and indicate that the granulites were derived from island arc mafic volcanic rocks and back-arc basin sediments. Sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe dating of metamorphic zircons from two mafic granulites yielded …

Geochemistry, zircon ages and whole-rock Nd isotopic systematics for Palaeoproterozoic A-type granitoids in the northern part of the Delhi belt, Raja…

2006

Determination of zircon ages as well as geochemical and Sm–Nd isotope systematics of granitoids in the Khetri Copper Belt of the Aravalli mountains, NW India, constrain the late Palaeoproterozoic crustal evolution of the Aravalli craton. The plutons are typical A-type within-plate granites, derived from melts generated in an extensional tectonic environment. They display REE and multi-element patterns characterized by steep LREE-enriched and almost flat HREE profiles and distinct negative anomalies for Sr, P and Ti. Initial εNd values range from −1.3 to −6.2 and correspond to crustal sources with mean crustal residence ages of 2.5 to 2.1 Ga. A lower mafic crustal anatectic origin is envisag…

Radiation damage in zircon

2003

A single, zoned, Sri Lankan zircon exhibits a range of microstructures from crystalline to nearly amorphous that are the result of radiation damage over a dose range of 2.1–10.1·1015 α-decay events/mg (0.16–0.47 dpa). The zones in the crystal were examined at a variety of length scales using optical microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. Birefringence varies linearly with dose: birefringence = −4.71·10−18 /g· D α + 4.86·10−2. Full width at half maximum (FWHM) measurements of the B1g(ν3) peak, as determined by micro-Raman spectroscopy, were used to estimate the extent of radiation damage in each zone. The radiation dose (calc…

Hardening and formation of dislocation structures in LiF crystals irradiated with MeV–GeV ions

2002

Abstract Material modifications of LiF crystals irradiated with Au, Pb and Bi ions of MeV to GeV energy are studied by means of microindentation measurements and dislocation etching. Above a critical irradiation fluence of 10 9 ions/cm 2 , the microhardness can improve by a factor of 2 in the bulk and by more than 3 on the surface. Radiation-induced hardening follows the evolution of the energy loss along the ion path. Annealing experiments indicate that complex defect aggregates created in the tracks play a major role for the hardness change. Evidence for severe structural modifications is found when etching indentation impressions in highly irradiated crystals leading to similar pattern a…

<title>Nature of fundamental absorption edge of WO<formula><inf><roman>3</roman></inf></formula></title&…

1997

The fundamental absorption edge of amorphous, polycrystalline and crystalline tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films obtained by different techniques (thermal evaporation, rf plasma sputtering, chemical gas transport) was investigated. Special attention was paid to correct measurements of absorption values of all WO3 thin films taking into account the scattered light, interference effects and reflection losses. The indirect edge at 2.70 eV was determined for crystalline WO3, but for crystal WO3:Ti the direct edge in the same place (2.72 eV) was found. For polycrystalline WO3 thin film first edge transition located at 2.76 eV had a quadratic dependence similar to the amorphous film at a higher p…
