Vacuum-ultraviolet absorption of amorphousSiO2: Intrinsic contribution and role of silanol groups

We present a study on the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) absorption properties of amorphous ${\text{SiO}}_{2}$ $(a{\text{-SiO}}_{2})$ with high concentrations of silanol groups (Si-OH). We found that the absorption spectra are made up of a couple of exponential profiles. The first, in the range from $\ensuremath{\sim}7.5$ to $\ensuremath{\sim}8.1\text{ }\text{eV}$, was attributed to Si-OH group absorption, while the second, in the range from $\ensuremath{\sim}8.1$ to $\ensuremath{\sim}8.25\text{ }\text{eV}$, was ascribed to the intrinsic absorption. Structural disorder and silanol groups content in amorphousSiO2

We present a study on the features of the Urbach edge in amorphous silicon dioxide $(a{\text{-SiO}}_{2})$. The effects of temperature on the absorption edge in the range from 4 to 300 K were studied in both materials having negligible (dry, $l{10}^{17}\text{ }{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$) and significant (wet, $g{10}^{19}\text{ }{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$) silanol groups contents. Remarkable differences in the values and in the temperature dependence of the Urbach energy in the dry and wet samples were observed. Micro- and nano-diamond particles in carbon spherules found in soil samples

Carbonaceous spherules of millimeter size diameter and found in the upper soils throughout Europe are investigated by TEM, including SAED, HRTEM and EELS, and Raman spectroscopy. The spherules consist primarily of carbon and have an open cell-like internal structure. Most of the carbon appears in an amorphous state, but different morphologies of nano- and microdiamond particles have also been discovered including flake shapes. Structure-dependent tuning of electro-optic and thermoplastic properties in triphenyl groups containing molecular glasses

Abstract The series of seven molecular compounds composed of D–π–A chromophores and triphenylmethyl auxiliary groups were characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and quantum chemical calculations. Nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of compounds were determined by second harmonic generation measurements in corona poled thin glassy films. The results show that triphenylmethyl auxiliary groups are effective at shielding undesirable dipole interactions in solid phase thus increasing NLO efficiency of materials. Thermal stability up to 108 °C was achieved for a polar order in poled samples.

Effect of oxygen deficiency on the radiation sensitivity of sol-gel Ge-doped amorphous SiO2

We report experimental investigation by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements of room temperature γ-ray irradiation effects in sol-gel Ge doped amorphous SiO2. We used materials with Ge content from 10 up to 104 part per million (ppm) mol obtained with different preparations. These latter gave rise to samples characterized by different extents of oxygen deficiency, estimated from the absorption band at ~5.15 eV of the Ge oxygen deficient centers (GeODC(II)). The irradiation at doses up to ~400 kGy induces the E'-Ge, Ge(1) and Ge(2) paramagnetic centers around g ~ 2 with concentrations depending on Ge and on GeODC(II) content. Near-Infrared Emission of O2 Embedded in Amorphous SiO2 Nanoparticles

We report an experimental study on the emission properties of O2 molecules loaded by a thermal diffusion process at 200 °C into high-purity silica nanoparticles with mean diameters of 7 and 40 nm. The embedded O 2 features a singlet to triplet emission band peaked at 1272 nm in agreement with the band observed for bulk silica materials. The photoluminescence excitation spectra have been determined in the visible and in the infrared range and are characterized by narrow bands peaked at 691, 764, and 1069 nm, respectively. Structure of amorphous SiO 2 nanoparticles probed through the E′ γ centers

We report an experimental investigation by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy on the properties of the E′ γ centers induced by β-ray irradiation in nanoparticles of amorphous SiO 2 (fumed silica) with mean diameters from 7 up to 40 nm. We found that the E′ γ centers are induced in all the fumed silica types in the dose range 4-400 kGy. They are characterized by an EPR line shape similar to that observed in common bulk silica materials independently on the particle diameter. Moreover, the E′ γ center concentration decreases on decreasing of the particle size for each given dose. Amorphous polymorphis in ice investigated by inelastic neutron scattering

Abstract High-density Ilda and low-density Ilda amorphous have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) with emphasis on the energy window from 0.5 to 20 meV. At variance with earlier measurements the spectra in the Ilda phase show a simple ω2 behaviour in the acoustic region and the temperature dependence is found to be harmonic. Ilda converts with a strongly temperature-dependent rate towards Ilda ice. We have investigated in detail the time evolution of both the static and dynamic response functions at several temperatures. The effect of the composition on the properties of?-irradiated ethylenevinyl alcohol copolymers

Two ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers (Eval E and Eval F with about 45% and 25% of ethylene respectively) have been irradiated in air in the dose range 0–200 Mrad. The irradiated samples show both crosslinking and degradation; the former effect is more relevant in the copolymer with a larger content of polyethylene. Calorimetric results show that both the crystalline and the amorphous phases are involved in the reactions initiated by the irradiation.
