Habituation and short-term repeatability of thermal testing in healthy human subjects and patients with chronic non-neuropathic pain

We investigated habituation effects during thermal quantitative sensory testing (tQST) using 8 repetitive measurements for thermal detection and pain thresholds. The same measurements were repeated two days later. 39 healthy subjects and 36 patients with chronic non-neuropathic pain syndromes (migraine, tension-type headache, non-radicular back pain) were enrolled. The pain intensity was assessed using an 11-point (0-10) numerical rating scale. Measurements correlated significantly over the two days in both groups (r=0.41...0.62). Perceptual correlates of nociceptive long-term potentiation and long-term depression in humans.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) of synaptic strength are ubiquitous mechanisms of synaptic plasticity, but their functional relevance in humans remains obscure. Here we report that a long-term increase in perceived pain to electrical test stimuli was induced by high-frequency electrical stimulation (HFS) (5 × 1 sec at 100 Hz) of peptidergic cutaneous afferents (27% above baseline, undiminished for >3 hr). However, studies assessing thoraco-pelvic covariation across Hominoidea species are scarce, although recent research would suggest shared covariation patterns in humans and chimpanzees but also species-specific features, with sexual dimorphism and allometry influencing thoraco-pelvic covariation in these taxa differently.

Background Early childhood intervention (ECI) centres in Spain recently initiated a process of change towards the adoption of family-centred practices (FCPs). Knowledge about the extent to which practitioners' use FCPs is needed. The psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the FCPs scale were examined. Method A convenience sample of 105 families of children with developmental delays attending three different ECI centres in Spain completed the FCPs scale and provided information about the ECI centre characteristics and practices, caregiver self-efficacy beliefs, and family and child demographic information. Abstract Background: Epidermal malformations of the skin include a group of heterogeneous developmental defects that result from errors in morphogenesis of the epidermis during intrauterine life. Tuberculoid leprosy and Type 1 lepra reaction.

Summary A patient is described with tuberculoid leprosy and Type 1 (lepra) reaction from Sicily a non-endemic region, who lived previously in Manila from 2000 to 2005. The skin lesions became acutely inflamed and edematous. The plaques were painless to touch or pinprick, and there was swelling of the nerves in the fibro-osseous tunnels under the surface of the skin, including both the ulnar nerve at the elbow, and the posterior tibial nerve (medial malleolus). During the course of electro-neurographic studies, conduction velocity in the motory nerves indicated a slowing-down.
