Polymorphonuclear leukocyte membrane fluidity before and after activation in subjects with insulin resistance.
2000
The aim of this research was the evaluation of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) membrane fluidity in subjects with insulin resistance. Insulin sensitivity, in fact, may be influenced by plasma membrane fluidity. We enrolled 19 subjects with insulin resistance previously demonstrated during an euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp. PMN membrane fluidity was studied by labeling intact cells with the fluorescent probe 1-[4-(trimethylamino)phenyl]-6-phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene and calculating the fluorescence polarization degree. The measurement was made before and after incubation of PMNs with two activating agents: 4-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (…
Classification characteristics of the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 for screening somatoform disorders in a primary care setting
2011
Abstract Background This study examines how effectively the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15), a self-administered screening instrument, recognizes somatoform symptoms and somatoform disorders in a German primary care setting. Methods A selected sample of 308 patients (mean age 47.2 years, 71.4% women) from two regular primary care practices was screened with the PHQ-15 and additionally examined with structured interviews. Their primary care physicians rated symptoms reported in the interview as either “medically explained” or “medically unexplained.” Results Seventy-six percent of the symptoms were judged as medically unexplained. The PHQ-15 correlated significantly with the total n…
Increasing physical activity through an Internet-based motivational intervention supported by pedometers in a sample of sedentary students: A randomi…
2017
The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of an Internet-based motivational intervention (IMI) supported by pedometers (in comparison with IMI alone and non-intervention) on increasing daily steps and changing constructs related to physical activity (PA) in a sample of sedentary students.A randomised-controlled trial was conducted with 76 sedentary or low-active college students. The purpose of the IMI was to deliver information to increase motivation and set individualised PA goals. It involved a 3-week intervention and a 3-months follow-up.Objective measures were used to measure daily steps, and self-report questionnaires to assess different constructs related to PA.Results revealed…
Sensory strategies of postural sway during quiet stance in patients with haemophilic arthropathy.
2017
Introduction: The sensory strategies of postural control in adult haemophilic arthropathy patients are still poorly understood. Aim: To determine sensorial posture-control strategies through postural sway frequency analysis when in a bipedal quiet stance with and without visual stimulus deprivation in healthy subjects and patients with haemophilic arthropathy. Secondarily, to determine the irregularity of postural balance control through sample entropy (SampEn). Methods: A triaxial accelerometer attached at the L3 level determined the displacement and acceleration of the centre of mass (DCoM and ACoM, respectively) under open-and closed-eyes conditions. Sensorial strategies were studied by …
Adaptation and validation of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to evaluate major depression in a primary care sample in Latvia
2017
Background: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in primary care settings and is often underdiagnosed and undertreated by general practitioners (GPs). To date, no depression screening instruments have been validated for use in primary care settings in Latvia. The aim of this study was to establish the validity and cutoff score of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) among primary care patients in Latvia. Materials and methods: During a one-week period, all consecutive patients aged 18 years or older visiting their GP of health concerns at 6 primary care settings were invited to complete the PHQ-9 questionnaire in their native language (Latvian or Russian). Criterion v…
Confirmatory factor analysis and psychometric properties of the Yale–Brown–Cornell Eating Disorders Scale Self-Report version (SR-YBC-EDS) in Spanish…
2015
[EN] Objective: The aimof the study was to adapt and validate the Yale Brown Cornell Eating Disorder Scale (YBC-EDS) transformed into a self-report format in Spanish clinical and non-clinical samples. Method: Eighty-three eating disordered patients and 358 non-clinical participants completed the Self Report-YBCEDS version (SR-YBC-EDS), the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT), and the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ). Results: Confirmatory factor analyses of a two-factor second-order model showed adequate values of goodness-of fit indices for non-clinical (normed ÷2=13.4578; df=18; NFI=0.980; GFI=1.00; RMSEA= 0.00) and clinical samples (normed ÷2 = 26.5913; df =18; NFI = 0.944; GFI = 0.981; RMS…
Increased sensitivity of the neuronal nicotinic receptor alpha-2 subunit causes familial epilepsy with nocturnal wandering and ictal fear
2006
Sleep has traditionally been recognized as a precipitating factor for some forms of epilepsy, although differential diagnosis between some seizure types and parasomnias may be difficult. Autosomal dominant frontal lobe epilepsy is characterized by nocturnal seizures with hyperkinetic automatisms and poorly organized stereotyped movements and has been associated with mutations of the α4 and β2 subunits of the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. We performed a clinical and molecular genetic study of a large pedigree segregating sleep-related epilepsy in which seizures are associated with fear sensation, tongue movements, and nocturnal wandering, closely resembling nightmares and sleep …
Cross-cultural adaptation of the orthognathic quality of life questionnaire (OQLQ) in a Brazilian sample of patients with dentofacial deformities
2010
Objectives: The aim of this study is to translate into Portuguese-Brazilian language and adapt cross-culturally to the Brazilian population the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ). Study Design: The cross-cultural adaptation process followed six stages which are; (I) initial translation, (II) synthesis of the translation, (III) back translation, (IV) expert committee and (V) test of the prefinal version. For validation process, the OQLQ results were compared with Oral Health Impact Profile Questionnaire (OHIP-49), with the generic SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire and a visual analogue scale. A convenience sample of 25 patients was selected in two Southern Brazilian states o…
Measuring corneal clouding in patients suffering from mucopolysaccharidosis with the Pentacam densitometry programme
2013
Aim To identify a means to objectively measure corneal clouding in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis in a prospective controlled clinical trial. Methods Corneal haze was assessed by slit lamp examination and measured using the densitometry programme of the Pentacam, a rotating Scheimpflug camera in 33 mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) patients and 32 controls. Results Pentacam measurements were available in 31 right and 31 left eyes of 32 patients and in 32 left and right eyes of 32 subjects in the control group. Slit lamp findings correlated very well with corneal density measurements (Spearman correlation right eye (OD)/left eye (OS)=0.782/0.791). MPS patients had higher density units (median…
Fragment reconstruction of coronary arteries using transesophageal echocardiography for coronary diagnostics
2008
Aims Ultrasound differs procedurally from the established methods for non-invasive coronary visualization and is therefore an interesting alternative for non-invasive diagnostics. In this study, fragment reconstruction of coronary arteries by transesophageal echocardiography (FRC-TEE) was investigated for the first time in a patient population being evaluated for coronary angiography. Methods and results Ultrasonic and angiographic findings were compared visually and using quantitative measurements in 50 patients. One hundred and seventy-one vessels were examined by FRC-TEE. The total lengths visualized were 9.6+ 1.7 cm for the right coronary artery, 7.0+ 1.1 cm for left circumflex, 3.9+ 1.…
