An International Comparison of Skills, Traits and Job Mobility

2019

Making use of an international survey that directly assesses the cognitive skills of the adult population, I document systematic differences in the effect of skills on job mobility across the 37 countries in the sample. While economic growth is associated with relatively higher job mobility among skilled workers, the prevalence of information and communication technology (ICT) in the workplace is associated with relatively lower job mobility. The documented patterns are in line with Schumpeterian growth models of creative destruction in which skilled workers transition to jobs with advanced technologies more easily.

Optical-sectioning microscopy by patterned illumination

2010

We propose a very simple method for the flexible production of 1D structured illumination for high resolution 3D microscopy. Specifically, we propose the insertion of a Fresnel biprism after a monochromatic point source for producing a pair of twin, fully coherent, virtual point sources. The resulting interference fringes are projected into the 3D sample and, by simply varying the distance between the biprism and the point source, one can tune the period of the fringes, while keeping their contrast, in a very versatile and efficient way.

Measuring the Developmental Function of Peer Review: A Multi-Dimensional, Cross-Disciplinary Analysis of Peer Review Reports from 740 Academic Journa…

2021

Reviewers do not only help editors to screen manuscripts for publication in academic journals; they also serve to increase the rigor and value of manuscripts by constructive feedback. However, measuring this developmental function of peer review is difficult as it requires fine-grained data on reports and journals without any optimal benchmark. To fill this gap, we adapted a recently proposed quality assessment tool and tested it on a sample of 1.3 million reports submitted to 740 Elsevier journals in 2018–2020. Results showed that the developmental standards of peer review are shared across areas of research, yet with remarkable differences. Reports submitted to social science and economic…

The formation of aggregate expectations: wisdom of the crowds or media influence?

2017

ABSTRACTThe general elections of 2015 in Spain were elections of change. Two new parties for which voters had no previous historical reference points burst onto the parliamentary scene. Two (partially) opposed theories vie to offer an explanation as to how voters build their aggregate electoral expectations. In this paper, we investigate which mechanism has the greatest influence on the formation of expectations: published opinion or social interactions. Likewise, we also study if there is an ideological bias in the voters’ perception of the future results of the electoral battle. Based on analysis of microdata from a survey (sample size = 14,262) conducted in Spain on the occasion of the g…

Motives for partial acquisitions between firms in the spanish stock market

2003

The paper analyses the motivations for inter-company investment on the Spanish Stock Market through the study of a sample of significant acquisitions reported to the CNMV (the Spanish Securities and Exchange Commission) by quoted firms. By analysing the sign of the cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) and of the correlations among the gains produced by the operation, an attempt is made to find out which motives predominate of the three most important ones suggested by the literature for takeovers: synergy, agency and hubris. Empirical evidence is presented that in the Spanish Stock Market the main motive for acquiring a holding is similar to synergy, especially in partial acquisitions with pos…

Who Moves to Depressed Regions? An Analysis of Migration Streams in Finland in the 1990s

2002

Depressed regions typically lose a large number of migrants but simultaneously are destination regions for some migrants. This study analyzes those people who decided to move to depressed regions in Finland in 1993-1996. The analysis is based on a 1 percent sample drawn from the Finnish longitudinal census. The results show that migration into depressed regions is also a selective process. Return migration is only one part of this migration. However, the more educated an individual is, the more likely she or he is to move to a flourishing region. The process of concentration of human capital is reinforced by interregional migration.

Hybrid nonlinear observer for Inertial Navigation

2016

This paper considers the problem of designing an observer for navigation and localization of inertial systems. Since the measurement systems used in this field have a low update rate with respect to the control algorithm, the design of a suitable observer with sampled measurements is required. Here a hybrid non-linear observer is proposed, combining two different observers with different characteristics. A theoretical treatment is given in order to prove the convergence of the observer and it will be contextualized in the framework of the hybrid systems, providing an elegant setting for the proposed solution. Finally experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed observer and the…

Hybrid Observer for Indoor Localization with Random Time-of-Arrival Measurments

2018

In this work an indoor position estimation algorithm will be proposed. The position will be measured by means of a sensor network composed by fixed beacons placed on the indoor environment and a mobile beacon mounted on the object to be tracked. The mobile beacon communicates with all the fixed beacons by means of ultra wide-band signals, and the distance between them is computed by means of time of flight techniques. Moreover, inertial measurements will be used when the position measurements are not available. Two main problems will be considered in the proposed architecture: the fact that the beacons work with a lower update rate than the IMU, and that the mobile beacon can comunicate wit…

Localization from inertial data and sporadic position measurements

2020

A novel estimation strategy for inertial navigation in indoor/outdoor environments is proposed with a specific attention to the sporadic nature of the non-periodic measurements. After introducing the inertial navigation model, we introduce an observer providing an asymptotic estimate of the plant state. We use a hybrid dynamical systems representation for our results, in order to provide an effective, and elegant theoretical framework. The estimation error dynamics with the proposed observer shows a peculiar cascaded interconnection of three subsystems (allowing for intuitive gain tuning), with perturbations occurring either on the jump or on the flow dynamics (depending on the specific sub…
