Skewness in financial returns
1999
Abstract In this paper the symmetry of daily returns is addressed in eight international stock markets and three spot exchange rates. Tests of symmetry with the sample skewness seem of little value, due to the non-normality of the returns. Under alternative non-normal distributions, the symmetry of the returns cannot be rejected for most markets. Distribution-free procedures do not detect strong asymmetries in most of the series either; however, some differences between returns below the mean and returns over the mean are observed in several markets
US-Based Fast Food Restaurants: Factors Influencing International Expansion of Franchise Systems
2010
Studies of international franchising are scant, but growing, and can be divided into two main streams of research: those focused on environmental predictors of internationalization and those focused on strategic, firm level characteristics. Belonging to the latter category, this study empirically examines a set of firm level attributes as predictors of the decision-making on whether or not firms seek international expansion. Using longitudinal data from Bonds’ Franchise Guide 2001-2008, we draw upon a sample of U.S. based fast food franchise systems for testing our hypotheses. Specifically, our database is comprised of 1058 observations for 158 chains and we estimate a semi-parametric logis…
Antecedents and consequences of virtual customer co-creation behaviours
2019
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to compare the antecedents and consequences of two distinct types of virtual co-creation behaviours that require different degree of effort from the customer, i.e. customer participation (CPB), and customer citizenship (CCB) behaviour, in a cross-cultural study. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted among members of online panels in the UK and Spain, reaching a sample of 800 online individuals who participate in online co-creation processes with fashion retailers. This design allows us to test the cross-cultural effects. Multi-group structural equations modelling was used to analyse the data. Findings Virtual co-creation behaviours are driv…

The continuous sample of working lives: Improving its representativeness
2017
This paper studies the representativeness of the Continuous Sample of Working Lives (CSWL), a set of anonymized microdata containing information on individuals from Spanish Social Security records. We examine several CSWL waves (2005–2013) and show that it is not representative for the population with a pension income. We then develop a methodology to draw a large dataset from the CSWL that is much more representative of the retired population in terms of pension type, gender and age. This procedure also makes it possible for users to choose between goodness of fit and subsample size. In order to illustrate the practical significance of our methodology, the paper also contains an applicatio…
A Note on added information in the RAS Procedure: reexamination of some evidence
2006
International audience; An example in Miernyk (1977) presented a rather counterintuitive result, namely that introducing accurate exogenous information into an RAS matrix estimating procedure could lead to an estimate that was worse than one generated by RAS using no exogenous information at all. This became an oft-cited black mark against RAS. Miller and Blair (1985) included a different (and small) illustration of the same possibility. It was recently pointed out by one of us that the Miller/Blair numerical results are wrong. For that reason, we decided to reexamine all the empirical evidence we could find on the subject. While figures in both Miernyk and Miller/Blair appear to be wrong, …

Over-education and job satisfaction: The role of job insecurity and career enhancing strategies
2021
Abstract Introduction Over-education is a current phenomenon, which hampers job satisfaction. Finding variables that moderates the deteriorating effect of over-education could be useful. Objective Present study analyses the relationship between over-education and intrinsic, extrinsic and social facets of job satisfaction, and the moderation role of career enhancing strategies and job insecurity. Method Sample was composed of 1362 participants 16–30 years-old that entered the job market in the previous five years, from the 2011 cohort of the Spanish Observatory for Labor Entry of Youth. Analyses were made using Process Macro. Results Results show that all direct relationships are significant…
Outcomes of Job Insecurity Climate: The Role of Climate Strength
2012
The large majority of studies on job insecurity have focused upon the individual level. Recent research has also paid some attention to job insecurity at the level of the organisation, referred to as job insecurity climate. This research has shown negative relationships between job insecurity climate and employees' individual job attitudes. Nevertheless, in these studies no attention has been paid to organisational climate strength, in spite of the recommendations formulated in the literature on this topic. In response, this study aims to account for climate strength in the relationship between job insecurity and job attitudes. We hypothesise that climate strength is related to job satisfac…
How might the Socio-moral Climate Buffer Job Insecurity Stressor A Multilevel Study in Spain and Austria
2020
A major current work stressor is job insecurity, which presents a well-established negative impact on wellbeing. In this vein, the aims of this study were: 1) to provide additional evidence on this relationship; 2) to examine the socio-moral climate as a potential situational buffer to ameliorate its detrimental effect. A multilevel approach was adopted to examine the socio-moral climate at higher levels (i.e., organisational level). The sample was composed of 1,435 employees from Spain and Austria. Random coefficient model results corroborated the negative relationship between job insecurity and employee affective wellbeing, the positive relationship between job insecurity and emotional ex…
