Evidence of the Gluten-Free and Casein-Free Diet in Autism Spectrum Disorders

2014

In autism spectrum disorders, many parents resort to alternative treatments and these are generally perceived as risk free. Among these, the most commonly used is the gluten-free, casein-free diet. The objective of this work was to conduct a systematic review of studies published from 1970 to date related to the gluten-free, casein-free diet in autism spectrum disorder patients. Few studies can be regarded as providing sound scientific evidence since they were blinded randomized controlled trials, and even these were based on small sample sizes, reducing their validity. We observed that the evidence on this topic is currently limited and weak. We recommend that it should be only used after…

Trace element determination in sediments: a comparative study between neutron activation analysis (NAA) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrome…

2000

An inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method has been employed for trace element determination in five real sediment samples and a standard reference material. These samples were mineralized by dry ashing at 550°C and fused at 1100°C for 30 min with lithium metaborate. Dissolved samples were measured by a semiquantitative methodology with external calibration and with Rh as an internal standard. More than 50 elements have been measured. As a reference technique, a direct analysis of the solid samples was carried out by neutron activation analysis. Results obtained by ICP-MS have been compared with those obtained by neutron activation analysis (NAA) by applying the paired …

ChemInform Abstract: Chemical Compounds and Toxicological Assessments of Drinking Water Stored in Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Bottles: A Source …

2012

A declaration of conformity according to European regulation No. 10/2011 is required to ensure the safety of plastic materials in contact with foodstuffs. This regulation established a positive list of substances that are authorized for use in plastic materials. Some compounds are subject to restrictions and/or specifications according to their toxicological data. Despite this, the analysis of PET reveals some non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) produced by authorized initial reactants and additives. Genotoxic and estrogenic activities in PET-bottled water have been reported. Chemical mixtures in bottled water have been suggested as the source of these toxicological effects. Furthermo…

Quantification of DNA and RNA: a Quantitative Visual Comparison

2002

The analytical procedure for the quantification of DNA and RNA described is the quantitative visual comparison of an unknown sample with known standards. This is quick and easy to do, suitable for amounts of sample as small as 10 ng. Keywords: DNA; RNA; rapid quantification

Comparative assessment of solid-phase extraction clean-up procedures, GC columns and perfluoroacylation reagents for determination of type B trichoth…

2005

Abstract Various solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedures for clean-up, two perfluoroacylation reagents (pentafluoropropionic anhydride (PFPA) and heptafluorobutyric anhydride (HFBA)) and two chromatographic columns (HP-1701 and HP-5) have been assessed comparatively to achieve the determination of type B trichothecenes (deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV), 3- and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3- and 15-ADON)) in wheat grain by gas chromatography (GC)–electron-capture detection (ECD). Spiked wheat samples were extracted with acetonitrile–water (84:16, v/v). Tested SPE procedures were MycoSep 225 column, Florisil and different cartridges prepared in the laboratory with mixtures of various sorben…

QUANTITATIVE QUANTUM MECHANICAL NMR ANALYSIS: THE SUPERIOR TOOL FOR ANALYSIS OF BIOFLUIDS

2016

Almost automatic quantitative analysis of biofluids is now behind only a few clicks from sample to EXCEL table after minimal sample preparation (move 0.3 ml sample into NMR tube and add buffer), without separations, calibration and reference materials, even for unknown compounds! Each organic compound with protons gives a highly diagnostic and unique NMR spectrum which is practically identical with any spectrometer operating at certain field. A distinctive feature of high-resolution 1D NMR spectra is that even the most complex spectrum of a compound can be described by a few spectral parameters within experimental accuracy, employing a quantum mechanical theory. The NMR spectral parameters…

New developments in immunochemical water analysis down to 30 mul sample volume.

1999

Abstract The determination of trace levels of pesticides like atrazine in water samples of small, restricted volumes is one of the future demands of environmental analysis. In a brief review existing chromatographic and immunochemical methods for atrazine are critically discussed. Then a simple rapid enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using the tip of an inoculation needle as a solid surface is presented. The sample volume could be reduced to 30 μl. The assay had a centre of the test IC50 of 0.12 μg l−1 and permitted the characterisation of atrazine at levels of 0.022–2.90 μg l−1. A first outlook for automatisation is given. The new method was compared with an ELISA using 96 well mic…
