Gendered Migratory Pathways: Exploring the Work Trajectories of Long-Term Romanian Migrants

This chapter analyzes the work trajectories of Romanian returnees who lived and worked for a long period of time in other EU countries. To understand the evolution of the work dimension of migrants’ lives, the chapter is built on subjective evaluations of their work experiences before migration, during their stay abroad, and upon return. The qualitative methodology and homogenous sample allow us to employ a gendered perspective on the relationship between international migration and individuals’ work trajectories. Benchmarking energy efficiency of water treatment plants: Effects of data variability

This study evaluates, for the first time, the energy efficiency of a sample of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) tolerance method, which is based on the simulation of scenarios to integrate data variations. The integration of data uncertainty in energy efficiency estimation changes drastically results for approximately one-third of the DWTPs evaluated. The results showed that, even in the best-case scenario, most of the DWTPs evaluated are inefficient and may therefore, be able to reduce the energy used to treat raw water. We describe a convenient method of preparing samples and characterizing the mixture of degradation products obtained from alkaline cupric oxide oxidation of water samples containing lignin and humic substances. The method was applied to one unpolluted humic water sample and a total mill effluent of a kraft pulp mill. The fractions (Mr > 1000) obtained by ultrafi1tration were oxidized and the products (mixtures of degradation products) were analyzed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (Spherisorb 5 ODS column). Fractionation of mercury in sediments during draining of Augusta (Italy) coastal area by modified Tessier method

Abstract A modified Tessier method was applied to sediments dredged from Augusta (Italy) coastal area with the purpose of establishing the amount and the forms in which mercury is present in the different sediment fractions. The mercury fractionation was made by measuring the concentration of the metal ion on the solutions and directly on the sediment fractions obtained by sequential extraction. The measurements on the solutions as well as that on the solid fractions were carried out by using a Direct Mercury Analyser, DMA 80.
