Adán y Eva. Una antropología darwinista

2020

Elastic force in Kant?s early works

2018

This paper argues that the notion of elastic force is an important and overlooked thread running through a number of Kant’s writings from 1754 to 1764. After presenting the historical context, I argue that the key aspects of Kant’s early understanding of physical elasticity can be found in On Fire (1755) and show how Kant attempts to explain a wide range of phenomena through elasticity. On my account, one aim of his account of physical monads is provide metaphysical grounds for elastic phenomena. Finally, I examine Kant’s hints that minds can be understood through an analogy with elastic physical phenomena. ispartof: Revista de Estudios Kantianos vol:3 issue:2 pages:190-207 status: published

Non-Riemannian geometry: towards new avenues for the physics of modified gravity

2015

Less explored than their metric (Riemannian) counterparts, metric-affine (or Palatini) theories bring an unexpected phenomenology for gravitational physics beyond General Relativity. Lessons of crystalline structures, where the presence of defects in their microstructure requires the use of non-Riemannian geometry for the proper description of their properties in the macroscopic continuum level, are discussed. In this analogy, concepts such as wormholes and geons play a fundamental role. Applications of the metric-affine formalism developed by the authors in the last three years are reviewed.

An alternative formulation of Classical Mechanics based on an analogy with Thermodynamics

2013

We study new Legendre transforms in classical mechanics and investigate some of their general properties. The behaviour of the new functions is analyzed under coordinate transformations. When invariance under different kinds of transformations are considered, the new formulation is found to be completly equivalent to the usual Lagrangian formulation, recovering well established results like the conservation of the angular momentum. Furthermore, a natural generalization of the Poisson Bracket is found to be inherent to the formalism introduced. On the other hand, we find that with a convenient redefinition of the Lagrangian, $\mathcal{L}^{\prime}=-\mathcal{L}$, it is possible to establish an …

The mathematics-physics analogy

1995

The basic goal of this chapter is to delve deeply into Godel’s second great strategy in the philosophy of mathematics: the analogy between deductive and empirical sciences. Moreover, I shall try to explore the holistic, and even conventionalist implications of the analogy, such as it appears in some contemporary philosophers of mathematics who have defended the analogy to some extent. To do this, it has been necessary to present an overview of the most important precedents in the use of the analogy, such as Russell, Hilbert, Carnap, Tarski, Quine. After that, I shall present Godel’s views on the analogy, in both his published and unpublished writings. Surprisingly, most of these authors mai…

Space-Time Analogies in Optics

2011

Abstract The so-called space-time analogy constitutes a source of inspiration to understand, engineer, and implement new systems for ultrafast optical signal processing based on concepts borrowed from the well-established field of Fourier Optics. In this review, we start by describing in a comprehensive manner the most basic notions of this analogy and discuss some recent developments with state-of-the-art technology, including the silicon-chip-based time lens and ultra-dispersive Raman devices, among others. Apart from the applications in optical communications, special emphasis is paid on the collateral benefits that the “ultra” appellative brings in fields as diverse as optical frequency…

BEF Analogy for Concrete Box Girder Analysis of Bridges

2010

<p>Box girder, due to its high torsional stiffness, is very appropriate for railway and highway long- medium span bridges. This type of cross section, subjected to transversely non-uniform loads, present warping and distortion phenomena. Accurate but time-consuming numerical procedures are available for determination of further strains and stresses caused by cross-section deformation. In this paper warping and distortion of box girders is evaluated through BEF analogy, by writing a 4th order differential equation. The problem is solved for practical cases of box girders by considering internal diaphragms stiffness. Graphs are supplied to designers and main design parameters affecting …

Settore IUS/09 - Istituzioni Di Diritto PubblicoThe article comment the ordinance no. 38 of 2022 of the Administrative Justice Council for the Sicilian Region (CGARS) approaching in particular: a) the extension by analogy of vaccination obligationSettore IUS/08 - Diritto Costituzionaleb) the obscurity and inconsistencies of the regulations on vaccination obligations in terms of access to social and health facilities. The contribution then focuses on the technical-scientific investigation and the motivation on the not manifest groundlessness of the issues of constitutional legitimacy concerning the discipline on the vaccination obligation and on the problematic aspects of the CGARS referral order.
