Unified theory for analysis of curved thin-walled girders with open and closed cross section through HSA method

Abstract The behaviour of thin-walled structures is deeply influenced by non-uniform torsion and cross section distortion. In this paper the extension of the Hamiltonian Structural Analysis (HSA) Method to thin-walled straight and curved beams is presented. The proposed method solves the structural elastic problem of thin-walled beams through the definition of a Hamiltonian system composed of 1st order differential equations. The method allows engineers to solve the elastic problem by introducing the degrees of freedom and the corresponding compatibility equations, founding equilibrium equations in the variational form. Logic, Computing and Biology

Logic and Computing are appropriate formal languages for Biology, and we may well be surprised by the strong analogy between software and DNA, and between hardware and the protein machinery of the cell. This chapter examines to what extent any biological entity can be described by an algorithm and, therefore, whether the Turing machine and the halting problem concepts apply. Last of all, I introduce the concepts of recursion and algorithmic complexity, both from the field of computer science, which can help us understand and conceptualise biological complexity.

Implicit learning shapes new conscious percepts and representations

We present here the lineaments of a new account of implicit learning, an account that does not rely on the notion of “implicit knowledge.” In this account, improved performance depends on the action of unconscious mechanisms that structure the phenomenal, conscious experience of the world. This integrative view makes groundless the search for dissociations between conscious and unconscious influences that has been at the core of the research on implicit learning and memory. The warping torsion as a sequence of infinite bending problems

[EN] In the present article, a methodology for teaching modeling problem of mixed torsion for thin-walled open sections. The mathematical analogy of warped twist as a problem of Euler-Bernoulli beams is exploited. In fact, the paper proposes to represent the warped torsion differential equation as a perturbation of the pure torsion or also called the Saint-Venant theory. Thus, it is demonstrated that under certain conditions related to the value of the torsional slenderness the response of a beam is the addition of infinite pure warped problems, that is, infinite bending problems, according to the analogy. We call this the asymptotic torsion analogy.

Collective behaviours: from biochemical kinetics to electronic circuits

In this work we aim to highlight a close analogy between cooperative behaviors in chemical kinetics and cybernetics; this is realized by using a common language for their description, that is mean-field statistical mechanics. First, we perform a one-to-one mapping between paradigmatic behaviors in chemical kinetics (i.e., non-cooperative, cooperative, ultra-sensitive, anti-cooperative) and in mean-field statistical mechanics (i.e., paramagnetic, high and low temperature ferromagnetic, anti-ferromagnetic). Viscoelasticity: an electrical point of view

Time dependent hereditary properties of complex materials are well described by power-laws with real order exponent. This experimental observation and analogous electrical experiments, yield a description of these properties by using fractional-order operators. The development of analogical reasoning : role of the executive component of inhibition

We explored the development of the analogical reasoning. The traditional conception of this development is that it is dependent of knowledge accretion in children (Gentner, 1983, 1988; Goswami & Brown, 1989, 1990). We used a different approach which explains it as dependent of the development of the executive functions, particularly of the component of inhibition.
