Analytical approach extending the Granier method to radial sap flow patterns

2020

Abstract The Granier thermal dissipation (TD) method is probably the most applied method to compute the transpiration flux of trees, due to its simplicity and effective compromise between theory and data availability. Starting from the heat transfer equations at the basis of Granier’s method, the objective of this paper is to derive an analytical solution for the transpiration flux to extend the sap flow equations to the radial domain. We adopted a flexible approach to cope with the differences in radial sapflow density (SFD) profile shapes that are known to occur in relation to wood anatomy (diffuse porous vs. ring- or non-porous xylem). With this purpose, we investigated the robustness of…

Evaluation of Perception Latencies in a Human-Robot Collaborative Environment

2020

The latency in vision-based sensor systems used in human-robot collaborative environments is an important safety parameter which in most cases has been neglected by researchers. The main reason for this neglect is the lack of an accurate ground-truth sensor system with a minimal delay to benchmark the vision-sensors against. In this paper the latencies of 3D vision-based sensors are experimentally evaluated and analyzed using an accurate laser-tracker system which communicates on a dedicated EtherCAT channel with minimal delay. The experimental results in the paper demonstrate that the latency in the vision-based sensor system is many orders higher than the latency in the control and actuat…

Enhancing the sound absorption of small-scale 3D printed acoustic metamaterials based on Helmholtz resonators

2018

Acoustic metamaterials have recently become of interest for their ability to attenuate sound by breaking the mass-density law. In this paper, acoustic metamaterials based on Helmholtz resonators and capable of attenuating sound up to 30 dB are fabricated for sound absorption applications in the small scale. The proposed metamaterials are subwavelength at a factor of $\lambda /12$ with respect to the lateral dimension of the units. The directional response due to the position of the acoustic source on the sound attenuation provided by the metamaterial is investigated by controlling the location of a loudspeaker with a robot arm. To enhance and broaden the absorption bands, structural modific…

UJI RobInLab's approach to the Amazon Robotics Challenge 2017

2017

This paper describes the approach taken by the team from the Robotic Intelligence Laboratory at Jaume I University to the Amazon Robotics Challenge 2017. The goal of the challenge is to automate pick and place operations in unstructured environments, specifically the shelves in an Amazon warehouse. RobInLab's approach is based on a Baxter Research robot and a customized storage system. The system's modular architecture, based on ROS, allows communication between two computers, two Arduinos and the Baxter. It integrates 9 hardware components along with 10 different algorithms to accomplish the pick and stow tasks. We describe the main components and pipelines of the system, along with some e…

Machine Learning Approaches for Activity Recognition and/or Activity Prediction in Locomotion Assistive Devices—A Systematic Review

2020

Locomotion assistive devices equipped with a microprocessor can potentially automatically adapt their behavior when the user is transitioning from one locomotion mode to another. Many developments in the field have come from machine learning driven controllers on locomotion assistive devices that recognize/predict the current locomotion mode or the upcoming one. This review synthesizes the machine learning algorithms designed to recognize or to predict a locomotion mode in order to automatically adapt the behavior of a locomotion assistive device. A systematic review was conducted on the Web of Science and MEDLINE databases (as well as in the retrieved papers) to identify articles published…

Smart sensing and adaptive reasoning for enabling industrial robots with interactive human-robot capabilities in dynamic environments — a case study

2019

Traditional industry is seeing an increasing demand for more autonomous and flexible manufacturing in unstructured settings, a shift away from the fixed, isolated workspaces where robots perform predefined actions repetitively. This work presents a case study in which a robotic manipulator, namely a KUKA KR90 R3100, is provided with smart sensing capabilities such as vision and adaptive reasoning for real-time collision avoidance and online path planning in dynamically-changing environments. A machine vision module based on low-cost cameras and color detection in the hue, saturation, value (HSV) space is developed to make the robot aware of its changing environment. Therefore, this vision a…

Assembly Assistance System with Decision Trees and Ensemble Learning

2021

This paper presents different prediction methods based on decision tree and ensemble learning to suggest possible next assembly steps. The predictor is designed to be a component of a sensor-based assembly assistance system whose goal is to provide support via adaptive instructions, considering the assembly progress and, in the future, the estimation of user emotions during training. The assembly assistance station supports inexperienced manufacturing workers, but it can be useful in assisting experienced workers, too. The proposed predictors are evaluated on the data collected in experiments involving both trainees and manufacturing workers, as well as on a mixed dataset, and are compared …

Collaboration and Decision-Making in Context

2016

The goal of this chapter is to provide a historical account of the evolutions in the domain of the book and to set the stage for the concepts and solutions to be presented in the following chapters, including the introduction of the terminology adopted to be used throughout this text. Consequently, we aim at providing the answers to a series of questions, such as: (a) “How the organizations have been evolving over the last decades?”, (b) “Which have been the corresponding trends of the management and control schemes?”, (c) “How management and control functions are allocated to human and automation equipment?”, (d) “Which are the desirable properties of the information processing tools meant…

Improved Active Disturbance Rejection Control for Trajectory Tracking Control of Lower Limb Robotic Rehabilitation Exoskeleton.

2020

Neurological disorders such as cerebral paralysis, spinal cord injuries[acronym](SCI), and strokes, result in the impairment of motor control and induce functional difficulties to human beings like walking, standing, etc. Physical injuries due to accidents and muscular weaknesses caused by aging [english]affectsaffect people and can cause them to lose their ability to perform daily routine functions. In order to help people recover or improve their dysfunctional activities and quality of life after accidents or strokes, assistive devices like exoskeletons and orthoses are developed. Control strategies for control of exoskeletons are developed with the desired intention of improving the qual…
