Reprezentacii migrantov v rossijkoj presse
2012
Pro gradu -tutkielma ”Maahanmuuttajien representaatiot Venäjän sanomalehdistössä” tarkas-telee niitä siirtolaisten representaatioita, jotka ilmenevät venäläisissä mediateksteissä vuoden 2009 alussa. Tutkimuksen päämääränä on selvittää, millaisia representaatioita aineistosta on mahdollista löytää; millaisin kielellisin keinoin siirtolaisia kuvataan, sekä millaisia ideologisia merkityksiä ja suhteita voidaan representaatioista löytää. Tutkimusaineistonani on Integrum -tietokannasta kerätyt 49 artikkelia kuudesta suuresta venä-läisestä sanomalehdestä. Genreltään aineisto edustaa lähinnä uutisia, artikkeleita sekä haas-tatteluja. Tutkimus tehdään kriittisen diskurssianalyysin metodilla; kriitt…
Reprezentaciâ obraza rossijskogo turista - na materiale tekstov regional'noj gazety "Ètelâ-Sajmaa"
2012
Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastellaan venäläisten turistien representointia maakuntalehdessä, Etelä-Saimaassa. Analysoinnin kohteena ovat mediatekstit, tarkemmin sanomalehtien tekstit. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu vuosina 2007–2011 julkaistuista venäläisiä turisteja käsittele-vistä sanomalehtiteksteistä, yhteensä 43 artikkelia. Aineisto kerättiin lehden internet-arkistosta hakusanalla "venäläiset turistit". Genreltään aineisto edustaa online- uutisia. Tutkimus tarkastelee kriittistä diskurssianalyysia apuna käyttäen lehdessä rakentuneita diskursseja ja niiden representaatioita. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, millaisia representaatioita aineistosta venäläisistä turisteista rakentuva…
Verkkokeskustelujen kansa : korpusavusteinen diskurssianalyysi Suomi24-keskustelupalstasta
2018
People 'kansa' in digital discourses. Corpus-assisted discourse analysis on Suomi24 discussion forum. In this paper, our objective is to analyze how participants use the word kansa 'people' on the largest discussion forum in Finland, called Suomi24 (Finland 24). Our main research questions are the following: 1) What kinds of discourses the forum participants relate to kansa 'people' and 2) what kinds of representations the writers attach to kansa and what kinds of meanings they construct for the term on the discussion forum. Our theoretical and methodological approach is based on corpus-assisted discourse analysis and on digital discourse analysis. Studying the data from two different persp…

Justice in and to nature : an application of the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice
2017
This dissertation applies and develops the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice. It is a new relational approach to justice, whose elements have been introduced by David Schlosberg in his works on environmental and ecological justice. The present study provides a systematisation of the framework and applies it to contemporary environmental topics using the methods of conceptual analysis and case-implication critique. The main outcome of this study is that the elements comprising the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice provide fresh and useful insights into topics like species extinctions and ecosystem wellbeing. In particular, the holistic and conflict…
The Unseen, the Discouraged, and the Outcast : Expressivity and the Foundations of Social Recognition
2018
AbstractThis article analyzes different pathologies of social affirmation and examines the grounds of social recognition from the point of view of the concept of expression. The red thread of the text is provided by Tove Jansson’s fictional works, and the focus will be on three cases in particular (the magic hat, the invisible girl and the figure of the Groke). The article sets out from the phenomenological distinction between the sensible expression, on the one hand, and the expressed content, on the other. By focusing on the three cases, the article distinguishes and analyses the fundamental structures of communal life and explicates different ways in which social affirmation can be one-s…
Spatial source phase : A new feature for identifying spatial differences based on complex-valued resting-state fMRI data
2019
Spatial source phase, the phase information of spatial maps extracted from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data by data‐driven methods such as independent component analysis (ICA), has rarely been studied. While the observed phase has been shown to convey unique brain information, the role of spatial source phase in representing the intrinsic activity of the brain is yet not clear. This study explores the spatial source phase for identifying spatial differences between patients with schizophrenia (SZs) and healthy controls (HCs) using complex‐valued resting‐state fMRI data from 82 individuals. ICA is first applied to preprocess fMRI data, and post‐ICA phase de‐ambiguity and den…
Online grocery shopping before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: A meta-analytical review.
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to limit their physical interactions, which has led to explosive growth in online grocery shopping. However, there is no clear consensus in the retailing literature on whether consumers prefer to buy groceries online. The objective of this current study is to synthesize research about online grocery shopping published before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and to develop a conceptual framework about online grocery purchase intentions and their determinants, the mediation effects of consumers’ attitudes, the moderating effects of COVID-19, and control variables. The meta-analysis presents data derived from 50 independent samples with a sample size of …
Identifying territories using presence-only citizen science data : An application to the Finnish wolf population
2022
Citizens, community groups and local institutions participate in voluntary biological monitoring of population status and trends by providing species data e.g. for regulations and conservation. Sophisticated statistical methods are required to unlock the potential of such data in the assessment of wildlife populations. We develop a statistical modelling framework for identifying territories based on presence-only citizen science data. The framework can be used to jointly estimate the number of active animal territories and their locations in time. Our approach is based on a data generating model which consists of a dynamic submodel for the appearance/removal of territories and an observatio…
