A short proof of the infinitesimal Hilbertianity of the weighted Euclidean space

We provide a quick proof of the following known result: the Sobolev space associated with the Euclidean space, endowed with the Euclidean distance and an arbitrary Radon measure, is Hilbert. Our new approach relies upon the properties of the Alberti-Marchese decomposability bundle. As a consequence of our arguments, we also prove that if the Sobolev norm is closable on compactly-supported smooth functions, then the reference measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Meta-Analysis, Ideals of Objectivity, and the Reliability of Medical Knowledge

This paper focuses on the ideals of scientific objectivity as they emerge in discussions concerning meta-analyses and medical research. Stegenga (2011) has argued that meta-analyses fail to be objective because conducting them involves making judgments. I show that his reasoning is based on the so-called procedural ideal of objectivity, which can be questioned: this ideal is unattainable and does not capture some of the problematic issues of medical research. This paper explores teacher elicitation practices following a perceived absence of a response to an initial inquiry. Specifically, we focus on whole class post-task discussions where a teacher pursues responses in post-first position following students’ non-uptake, and thus makes her orientation toward the expectation of a response publicly available. This study explores the ways students in a higher education setting engage in word searches. The investigation draws on 30-hour video recordings of content classes in an English as a medium of instruction university in Turkey. Using conversation analysis, the study focuses on the interactionally accomplished functions of vocal and visual practices deployed by the students in the course of a word search. We revealed that word searches are constructed through publicly visible resources (i.e. gaze, body orientation, gestures) and explicit formulaic expressions (i.e. how can I say it?), and accomplished via bilingual resources. Tarkastelun kohteena on kaksi suomalaista häälehteä, Häät ja Mennään naimisiin, joiden sana-aineiston perusteella kartoitetaan sitä, miten naisista ja miehistä lehdissä puhutaan. Ensisijaisen mielenkiinnon kohteena ovat naisiin ja miehiin viittaavat nimitykset sekä heitä kuvailevat adjektiivit ja partisiipit. Jouko Laaksamo tutkii Usko Meriläisen tuotantoa vuodesta 1963 alkaen, jolloin säveltäjä siirtyi rivimusiikista kohti vapaammin hahmottuvia musiikillisia rakenteita. Assessment of environmental impacts with life cycle methods in nanotechnology industry

This thesis inspected how nanotechnology companies in Finland have been assessing the environmental impacts of their products and processes. The research focused on using life cycle based methods that take into account the environmental impacts during the whole lifetime of a product. The subject was studied mainly through three qualitative case studies. Millidyne Oy, Vaisala Oyj and UPM-Kymmene Oyj were interviewed. Also quantitative research was used to some extend in the form of a company questionnaire.
