Prevalence and Spectrum of Germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 Variants of Uncertain Significance in Breast/Ovarian Cancer: Mysterious Signals From the Genome
2021
About 10–20% of breast/ovarian (BC/OC) cancer patients undergoing germline BRCA1/2 genetic testing have been shown to harbor Variants of Uncertain Significance (VUSs). Since little is known about the prevalence of germline BRCA1/2 VUS in Southern Italy, our study aimed at describing the spectrum of these variants detected in BC/OC patients in order to improve the identification of potentially high-risk BRCA variants helpful in patient clinical management. Eight hundred and seventy-four BC or OC patients, enrolled from October 2016 to December 2020 at the “Sicilian Regional Center for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Rare and Heredo-Familial Tumors” of University Hospital Policlini…

Concomitant dental injuries in maxillofacial fractures - a retrospective analysis of 1219 patients
2014
BACKGROUND/AIM: Traumatic dental injuries are frequently combined with maxillofacial fractures, but literature addressing this topic is rare. In a retrospective study, the frequency of dental lesions in inpatients with traumatic facial injuries was analyzed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz for inpatient treatment due to facial fractures between January 2001 and December 2007 were analyzed regarding the type of fracture, its localization, and potential concomitant dental injuries. Postural stability in subjects with whiplash injury symptoms: results of a pilot study
2014
Posturographic tests can be used to assess and confirm the body's imbalance in subjects with whiplash injury. Further studies with larger cohorts are necessary to confirm this pilot study. To verify through a posturographic exam the qualitative and quantitative alterations of postural stability in subjects with previous cervical trauma in comparison with healthy subjects.A total of 42 subjects were analysed for the study; 22 as the control group (NM) and 20 (WM) with a positive anamnesis of whiplash injury from 3 to 12 month from diagnosis through a force platform. Centre of pressure (CoP) movements of the two groups with their eyes open and closed were recorded.During the closed eye test, t…
Diabetes and hyperglycemia as risk factors for postoperative outcome in maxillofacial surgery.
2017
Abstract Background Aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of complications in maxillofacial surgery in-patients in correlation to diabetes mellitus or a pathologically altered glucose metabolism. Materials and methods All patients' electronic health records were analyzed retrospectively. Diabetes mellitus anamnesis, the treatment regime, blood glucose levels, and the duration of inpatient treatment were recorded. Glucose readings ≥200 mg/dL measured at any time and fasting glucose levels of ≥110 mg/dL were defined as hyperglycemic. Noted complications were infection, dehiscence, swelling, and necrosis. Results 8.7% out of 1374 patients had a known diabetes diagnosis. 13.0% had …
Preoperative factors influencing success in pterygium surgery
2012
Abstract Background To identify preoperative, perioperative and postoperative risk factors that influence the success of pterygium surgery. Methods This is a prospective study of thirty-six patients with primary or recurrent pterygia. A detailed anamnesis and an ophthalmological examination were performed looking for the following factors: age, race, latitude and altitude of the main place of residence, hours of exposure to the sun, use of protective measures against UV-radiation, classification of pterygium, width of the pterygium at limbus, surgical technique (conjunctival autograft plus suturing versus tissue glue), graft alterations (misapposition, granuloma, haemorrhage, oedema, retrac…

The referral centers for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension in adolescents
2015
Primary hypertension in adolescence was felt to be quite rare. However, the worldwide childhood obesity epidemic has had a profound impact on the frequency of high blood pressure (BP) with the result that primary hypertension should now be viewed as one of the most common health conditions in the young (estimated prevalence 1–5%). Therefore, current guidelines recommend that all children and adolescents seen in a medical setting should have their BP measured. The availability of BP tables with normal BP percentiles for age, sex and height has improved BP values classification. Studies conducted at referral clinics for evaluation of hypertension have indicated that as many as 30 to 40% of ad…
