This paper sets out to analyse the development of demonstrative adverbs of place in Catalan and Spanish. The main questions dealt with in this study are the following: (i) why two-term and three-term deictic systems often display a certain lack of stability so that diachronically two-term systems sometimes become three-term (as in old Catalan and Spanish) or, the other way round, three-term systems become two-term (like in late Latin and in Catalan during the modern era); (ii) if the most normal and expected development is for deictic systems to take on anaphoric values, why in the case of the adverb aquí ('near the speaker and/or addressee') in Catalan and the adverb ahí ('near the address…

This chapter presents the technical framework that the authors used to define fragments of natural languages and formulate questions as to their semantic complexity. It examines the study of the classical syllogistic and its extensions. It analyzes the semantic complexity of various salient fragments of English. It highlights that the language of argument, featuring transitive verbs, is in an objective sense inferentially no more complex than the language of classical syllogisms exemplified by argument, indeed, the analogous extension featuring ditransitive verbs involves only a modest increase in complexity. The paper presents one of most important issues in natural language processing (NLP), namely the automated recognition of semantic relations (in this case, bridge anaphora). In this sense, we propose to recognize automatically, as accurately as possible, this type of relations in a literary corpus (the novel Quo Vadis), knowing that the diversity and complexity of relations between entities is impressive. Furthermore, we defined and classified the bridge anaphora type relations based on annotation conventions. La contextualisation de la description des formes du pronom de 3e personne en francais montre que celles-ci constituent un systeme composite representant un patchwork caracterise par l’utilisation d’elements empruntes a diverses categories grammaticales et par une tres grande asymetrie interne. La description habituelle des manuels de grammaire ne permet pas aux apprenants FLE d’apprehender la logique interne du systeme. Pourtant, les parametres selon lesquels les formes varient peuvent etre facilement identifies et decrits, et il est possible de fournir a l’apprenant un ensemble de regles precises grâce auxquelles il peut choisir la forme adequate du pronom.
