An experimental study on magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis in piglets.

2019

Abstract Introduction Fashioning a patent, watertight anastomosis in patients with esophageal atresia is a challenging task in pediatric surgery, particularly when performed under tension. A reproducible suture-less alternative would decrease operative time. We evaluated magnetic esophageal compression anastomoses in a novel bypass-loop swine model. Methods Eight-week-old piglets underwent thoracotomy to mobilize the esophagus at the carina to create a U-shaped loop. Custom-made 8 mm diameter Neodymium Magnets were inserted into the esophagus proximal and distal to the loop, then mated side-to-side at the future anastomosis site. Pigs were observed for 8 (n = 4), 10 (n = 6), and 12 (n = 2) …

Correlation between fecal incontinence and quality of life after low anterior resection for rectal cancer

2014

SUMMARY Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between fecal incontinence and quality of life after low anterior resection and long-term follow-up. Methods: For 72 patients with coloanal or low colorectal anastomosis, the quality of life was determined by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) questionnaires C-30 and CR-38. The Vaizey score was used for assessment of fecal incontinence. Results: The risk of fecal incontinence significantly increased with a lower level of anastomosis (p < 0.001). The QLQ CR-38 did not discern differences between patients. The OLQ C-30 only found significantly worse social and role function in pat…

Experimental reimplantation utilizing microvascular anastomosis in animals.

1977

Summary The use of the operating microscope and special microsurgical instruments make it possible to achieve successful anastomosis of blood vessels of less than 1 mm in diameter. Microvascular surgery offers newer possibilities in the transplantation of dermisfat grafts, and has led to an unusually high degree of success in the reimplantation of tissues. This paper describes a technique for microvascular anastomosis in animal experiment, using as a model the reimplantation of a completely amputated rabbit ear. In 10 amputated rabbit ears, the central auricular artery with a diameter of 0.5 mm and the two marginal auricular veins with diameter of 0.5–1.0 mm were microsurgically anastomosed…

Laparoscopic versus robotic right colectomy with extra-corporeal or intra-corporeal anastomosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

2020

Purpose: The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare laparoscopic right colectomy (LRC) versus robotic right colectomy (RRC) using homogeneous subgroup analyses for extra-corporeal anastomosis (EA) and intra-corporeal anastomosis (IA). Methods: MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched up to April 2020 for prospective or retrospective studies comparing LRC versus RRC on at least one short- or long-term outcome. The primary outcome was the length of hospital stay (LOS). The secondary outcomes included operative and pathological results, survival, and total costs. LRC and RRC were compared using three homogeneous subgroups: without distinction by…

Standard Outcome Indicators After Colon Cancer Resection. Creation of a Nomogram for Autoevaluation

2016

Abstract Introduction Lately there has been an increasing interest in identifying quality standards in different pathologies, among them colon cancer due to its great prevalence. The main goal of this study is to define the quality standards of colon cancer surgery based on a large prospective national study dataset. Methods Data from the prospective national study ANACO were used. This study included a consecutive series of patients operated on for colon cancer in 52 Spanish hospitals (2011–2012). Centers with less than 30 patients were excluded. The present analysis finally included 42 centers (2975 patients). Based on the results obtained in 4 main indicators from each hospital (anastomo…

Median-to-Ulnar Nerve Communication in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: An Electrophysiological Study

2021

The median-to-ulnar communicating branch (MUC) is an asymptomatic variant of the upper limb innervation that can lead to interpretation errors in routine nerve conduction studies. The diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or ulnar nerve lesions can be complicated by the presence of MUC. In this study, we describe electrophysiological features of MUC in CTS patients presenting to our clinic. We enrolled MUB cases from consecutive CTS patients referred to our laboratory between the years 2014 and 2019. MUC was present in 53 limbs (36 patients) from the studied population. MUC was bilateral in 53% of patients. MUC type II was the most common subtype (74%), followed by types III and I

Technical advances in radical retropubic prostatectomy techniques for avoiding complications. Part II: vesico-urethral anastomosis and nerve-sparing …

2003

We previously reviewed different technical modifications and improvements in apical dissection in radical retropubic prostatectomy which have a considerable effect in optimizing the results. This second paper focuses on the vesico-urethral anastomosis and aspects of nerve-sparing prostatectomy.
