2021
The Lexikon by Hesychius from Alexandreia (V-VI century) is one of the most important lexicographical works in Ancient Greek. It contains an encyclopedic amount of glossematic terms (lexeis) from several kinds of literary sources – epic, lyric and dramatic poetry, rhetoric, historiography, paremiography, neo and veterotestamentary tradition, and so on. Although medical glosses – in particular Hippocratic – are significantly present in the Lexikon, they have not been systematically investigated so far. After presenting a brief story of the more recent studies on the textual tradition and the edition of the Hesychius’ work, this paper aims to offer a thorough investigation of some Hesychian g…
IE *weid- as a Root with Dual Subcategorization Features in the Homeric Poems.
2012
This paper is organized as follows: the first section sketches the theoretical background involved in the case study of Old Greek éidon/óida. As is well known, the aorist éidon takes only an accusative DP-object, while the perfect óida can take either a genitive or an accusative DP-object. Sections 2-5 I aim to prove that the diachronic development of the root *weid- in early Greek must be take into consideration to explain the synchronic phenomenon of dual subcategorization features. This root proves indeed to be polysemous and is split into two different meanings which are lexicalised by means of different bridging contexts and different morphological developments. In section 6 the peculi…
Linguistic Analysis and Ancient Indo-European Languages
2015
Using modern linguistic theory to describe ‘dead’ languages is one of the theoretical and methodological challenges in contemporary linguistic research. In fact, theories of the twentieth century mostly aimed to account for speakers’ linguistic competence, thus basing their analysis on live speakers and their intuitions. However, drawing on evidence from languages such as Vedic, Greek, Latin, Hittite, Gothic, Celtic and Proto-Indo-European itself, the relevance of the ancient Indo-European languages to contemporary linguistic theory has been constantly shown, since the rise of the linguistic sciences in the early nineteenth century. In fact, the observation of ancient Indo-European language…
Re-giardinieri e Natura selvaggia.
2022
In Sumerian mythological literature, as in coeval Akkadian one, between the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 2nd millennium, the ruler, foremost among them Gilgameš, on several occasions uproots and/or cuts down trees. These trees should be understood as elements of a wider ‘Wilderness’, with which they share a powerful and ambiguous ontological otherness compared to the city and, more generally, to the land of Sumer. The action of the king on the tree, like that of a farmer or gardener, with the consequent realization of ‘artefacts’, allows, through a cultural organization of the power of the tree, the renewal of the relationship, always subject to crisis, between the human communit…
2019
Today ancient Noto is a medieval archaeological site, yet to be discovered. After the 1693 earthquake, the ancient city of Noto, in the middle of the Baroque period, was rebuilt in another place and the ancient city was abandoned. The first excavation campaign in ancient Noto by Paolo Orsi dates back to the period between 1894 and 1896. In the following years there will be other excavation campaigns, in which other architectural and sculptural relics will be found. They are today part of the collection of the Civic Museum. The contribution focuses on the study of the piazza Maggiore (Main Square) site, the center of the ancient city and on the surrounding buildings. After analyzing the limi…
2021
In this work some new considerations and an update of the observations on the topography and urban planning of ancient Palermo are presented, thirty years after our article published in Kokalos 1987. It is noted that the hypotheses then formulated were confirmed by new archaeological excavations and new archaeological samples are proposed to solve open problems and create an archaeological open-GIS of the city accessible to all interested users and public administrations.
Platone e gli Eleati (I)
2017
