Research on the Theatre at Hierapolis Phrygia:An Integrated Approach
2011
Since 2004 the Theatre at Hierapolis in Phrygia has been the centre of a new research programme, led by Prof. Dr. Francesco D’Andria of Università del Salento, that incorporates architectural study, restorations and the monument’s presentation to the public. The programme has been conducted by the architectural historians from Politecnico di Torino and experts in 3D modelling and graphical restoration from IBAMLecce.
The Nymphaeum of the Tritons at Hierapolis of Phrygia (Turkey) from excavations to 3D-virtual reconstruction: an example of integrated methods in the…
2011
The Nymphaeum of the Tritons at Hierapolis of Phrygia is a monumental fountain of the Roman period with an imposing marble façade. Within the activities of the Italian Archaeological Mission the Nymphaeum is currently being studied by a team from the University of Messina with the goal of understanding its original layout and its history. The starting point of the study is the wealth of data provided by stratigraphic excavation of the building, particularly by the extensive archaeological deposits formed by the blocks of the façade collapsed into the pool of the fountain following an earthquake in the 7th century AD. The need to process a large amount of data required the creation of a comp…
The words of conjecture. Semiotics and epistemology in ancient medicine and rhetoric
2016
This article considers the epistemology of Classical rhetoric and Hippocratic medicine, focusing on two key terms: semeion and tekmerion. Through an analysis of the specific case of ancient Greek medicine and rhetoric, we hope to bring out the conjectural and fallible nature of human knowledge. The paper focuses on the epistemological and methodological affinity between these two ancient technai, and considers the medical uses of semeion and tekmerion in the light of their meaning in the rhetorical sphere. Chronologically, the analysis follows an inverse pathway: it starts from Aristotle and from Rhetorica ad Alexandrum, and then moves on to Antiphon’s texts (chosen as an exemplary case) an…

Going, Returning, Rising. The Movement of the Organs in the Mesopotamian Anatomy
2019
Although many assyriological studies have been done on internal organs in the Mesopotamian worldview, the pathologies associated with them, and their metaphorical and ideological value, little attention have been paid to the fact that, sometimes, internal organs are associated with verbs of movement. Perhaps, this limited regard can be attributed to the assyriological look at the Mesopotamian body being shaped by the modern biomedicine. According to biomedicine, in fact, the human internal anatomy is composed of a series of organs which stay fixed in their positions. On the contrary, I want to show how the internal organs in Mesopotamian anatomy are thought as capable to move. I will demons…
