Identification of plant cells in black pigments of prehistoric Spanish Levantine rock art by means of a multi-analytical approach. A new method for s…

2017

We present a new multi-analytical approach to the characterization of black pigments in Spanish Levantine rock art. This new protocol seeks to identify the raw materials that were used, as well as reconstruct the different technical gestures and decision-making processes involved in the obtaining of these black pigments. For the first of these goals, the pictorial mat- ter of the black figurative motifs documented at the Les Dogues rock art shelter (Ares del Maestre, Castello ́ n, Spain) was characterized through the combination of physicochemical and archeobotanical analyses. During the first stage of our research protocol, in situ and non- destructive analyses were carried out by means of…

Il recupero e la manutenzione della Gipsoteca di scultura antica del Dipartimento Culture e Società dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo

2018

The Department Cultures and Societies of the University of Palermo in Italy owns a collection of forty plaster casts of ancient sculpture, dating back to the age of the academic teaching of Antonino Salinas (1841- 1914). In the intentions of the great archaeologist of Palermo, the plaster cast collection was of unavoidable help to teach classical art, in line with the contemporary usages of the Italian and foreign Universities. In the following decades, as everywhere, the collection progressively ended up by losing its central position in the study of archaeology, according to the transformations and the developments of the discipline over the twentieth century. In the latest times, all the…

The Slovak Case: From Upper Hungary’s Slavophone Populus to Slovak Nationalism and the Czechoslovak Nation

2009

As a political entity, Slovakia emerged in 1918 within the broader framework of Czechoslovakia. The ethnonym ‘Slovak,’ though known since the mid-15th century, denoted either a Slav in general or a Slavophone inhabitant of Upper Hungary. Only in the course of the 19th century was the usage limited exclusively to the latter case. Although the name ‘Slovakia’ for the region where the Slovaks lived appeared at the end of the 18th century, it did not gain any official recognition until 1918 when Czechoslovakia came into being. Clearly, the nationalism of the Slovaks is much more steeped in ethnicity than that of the Magyars, the Poles, or the Czechs (Flajshans 1924: 5, 307).

A Brief Political History of the Baltic States

2015

Political discourse in the Baltic states is marked by debates on the past as much as on the future. The 1980s drive to break from the Soviet Union, driven by an overwhelming sense of historical injustice, began with small ‘calendar demonstrations’ marking significant dates in Baltic history. Key domestic and international disputes are based on contested interpretations of history. This is particularly visible each spring in Latvia. On 16 March a shrinking number of Latvian Waffen SS Legion veterans, along with several hundred nationalist supporters, march from the historic Dom Church in the Old Town of Riga to the towering Freedom Monument, the symbol of Latvia’s independent statehood. Ther…

The Display of Royal Ecclesiastical Power: The Palatine Chapel of Palermo (1586–1713)

2021

Any study of the Palatine Chapel in Palermo should take into account the two contexts of Spanish Caesaropapism in Sicily, namely a Church established by Habsburg rulers with the monarch at its head, and international relationships between the Spanish Monarchy, France, and the Holy See. This chapel, situated right at the heart of the Royal Palace – seat of both the Viceroy and the tribunals of the Kingdom – was actually a sort of miniature cathedral for the Spanish king-pope (as ecclesiastical patron and papal legate), and the fact that it was dedicated to Saint Peter clearly evoked the papal Basilica of the same name in Rome. The Palatine Chapel was indeed one of the main issues associated …
