On the Standards of Conceptual Change

Abstract It is a necessary condition for recognising change that there is a yardstick against which the change can be perceived. The same applies to changes that philosophical concepts undergo. This paper delineates standards for recognising conceptual change that meet the requirements of conscientious history of philosophy. More particularly, we want to argue for the need of what we will call non-textual standards. These are features of the world of experience that must be assumed to be shared between us and the historical authors we study. Verkostonäkökulma korostuu vahvasti luonnonsuojelun suunnittelussa Suomessa ja maailmalla. Suojelualueita ei voi nähdä yksittäisinä eristyneinä alueina, vaan luonnonsuojelualueiden verkosto ja koko ympäröivä maisema ylläpitävät yhdessä tietyn alueen eliölajistoa. Parhaiden alueiden kytkeytyvyyden varmistamista ja verkostojen ylläpitämistä on myös ehdotettu ratkaisuksi biodiversiteetin säilyttämiselle, kun ilmastonmuutos pakottaa lajeja siirtymään uusille asuinalueille. The aim of this paper is to recover the role of the [± telic] inherent feature of PIE verbal roots, regardless of the many different meanings which derived verbs could take depending on their combination with arguments, adverbials, and so on. Semantic changes due to different contexts could have indeed obscured the relationship between the original lexical aspect of a verb and the structure of its morphological paradigm. The presence of singularity surfaces with reference to the displacement field is a characteristic of a number of structural systems. Strong discontinuities are present in old masonry structures where dry joints connect the blocks or the mortar ageing suggests to neglect the adhesion properties. These structures cannot be considered a continuum but rather an assembly of blocks.
