Prenatal vitamin supplementation and pediatric brain tumors: huge international variation in use and possible reduction in risk

An international case-control study of primary pediatric brain tumors included interviews with mothers of cases diagnosed from 1976-1994 and mothers of population controls. Data are available on maternal vitamin use during pregnancy for 1051 cases and for 1919 controls in eight geographic areas of North America, Europe and Israel. While risk estimates varied by study center, combined results suggest that maternal supplementation for two trimesters may decrease risk of brain tumor [odds ratio (OR)=0.7; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.5-0.9], with a trend toward less risk with longer duration of use (P trend= 0.0007). MRI in DNM2-related centronuclear myopathy: Evidence for highly selective muscle involvement

Dynamin 2 has recently been recognized as a causative gene for the autosomal dominant form of centronuclear myopathy (dominant centronuclear myopathy). Here we report an affected father and daughter with dynamin 2 related AD CNM with predominantly distal onset of weakness. In addition to the diagnostic central location of myonuclei the muscle biopsy also showed core-like structures. Subcortical somatosensory evoked potentials after median nerve stimulation in children.

We report our normative data of subcortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) after median nerve stimulation from a group of 55 children 4–15 years of age and 18 young adults 18–29 years of age. We recorded near-field potentials from the brachial plexus, the cervical cord and the somatosensory cortex. The far-field potentials P13, P14 and N18 from the brainstem were recorded from the scalp electrodes, when a non-cephalic reference at the contralateral Erb's point or an ear reference was used. Abnormal Somatosensory Evoked Potentials Indicate Compressive Cervical Myelopathy in Mucopolysaccharidoses

Compressive myelopathy at the cranio-cervical junction is a complication of mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). To detect cervical myelopathy we recorded median and posterior tibial nerve SEPs in 15 patients aged 2.4 - 33.4 years (median 8.8 years) with MPS I-S (n = 3), MPS IVA (n = 8) and MPS VI (n = 4). In addition to the cortical waveforms we recorded the subcortical median nerve SEPs N13b and P13 generated near the cranio-cervical junction and the lemniscal P30 after posterior tibial nerve stimulation. Transient hepatic nodular lesions associated with patent ductus venosus in preterm infants.

We report on two cases of low-birth-weight preterm infants with patent ductus venosus associated with hepatic hypoechoic lesions of the fourth segment in an otherwise normal liver. Although tumorlike hepatic lesions have been previously reported in association with portosystemic shunts in children and adults, they were never described in preterm infants during physiological patency of ductus venosus. In our patients, hepatic lesions disappeared shortly after the spontaneous ductus closure. Physiopathologic interactions are discussed regarding altered portal blood supply caused by ductus venosus shunt.

Aim: To identify the molecular defect by which non-autoimmune subclinical hyperthyroidism was caused in a 6-mo-old infant who presented with weight loss. Methods: Congenital non-autoimmune hyperthyroidism is caused by activating germline mutations in the thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) gene. Therefore, the TSHR gene was sequenced directly from the patient's genomic DNA. Results: Molecular analysis revealed a heterozygous point mutation (S505R) in the TSHR gene as the underlying defect. Children of parents with cancer: a collaborative project between a child psychiatry clinic and an adult oncology clinic.

This article describes the development of a collaborative relationship between a child psychiatry clinic and an adult oncology clinic within a university hospital. The interest of the child psychiatry clinic was to pay attention to children of parents with cancer, and to propose an intervention to support them. A child-centred family counselling model was designed for this purpose. The preparation, implementation, and results of this project are described. Positive results, as well as mistakes and failures are discussed, and recommendations are made regarding this kind of collaboration.
