Retropharyngeal haematomas are a rare complication of central venous catheters insertion. A case of a retropharyngeal haematoma in a patient treated by acetylsalicylic acid is reported. This case emphasized the difficulty in diagnosis. Close airway surveillance must be done and can lead to surgery in case of airway obstruction.

During the last 2 years, some interesting new devices have been made available to improve airway management in children and infants, and several studies have advanced our understanding concerning risks and benefits of the current practice in the field. Certain risk factors for airway related problems during anaesthesia in children having a cold have been identified, and new aspects of the controversy concerning the use of cuffed endotracheal tubes in children presented. Because of the substantial morbidity and mortality provoked by massive bleeding, a protocol to guide treatment of this event in each hospital is required. The present article reviews the physiopathology of massive bleeding. The literature on massive hemorrhage and transfusion is extensively reviewed with a view to designing a practical document that could serve as a template to be adapted to the specific needs and resources of each center.
