Centres and peripheries in Finland: Granger causality tests using panel data

2009

Abstract Despite their importance from a policy point of view, empirical studies on the effects of growth centres in their regions are rare. This paper analyses mutual relationships between growth processes in centres and their surrounding hinterlands in 19 Finnish regions. Annual population data from the period 1970–2004 are used. A novel testing procedure based on an extension of the Granger causality definition in a panel data context is applied. Heterogeneity between regions is allowed. Both the homogeneous non-causality hypothesis and the homogeneous causality hypothesis are rejected. Causal processes prove to be heterogeneous. Causality from centres to peripheries is found for nine re…

DNA Fingerprinting for the Protection of Endangered Species

1991

The main application of DNA fingerprinting is based on identity and paternity testing in man [6, 7]. In the last years it has also been increasingly used for zoological problems [2–5, 8, 10, 12, 13]. In this study DNA fingerprinting was applied for “forensics” in the field of protection of endangered species.

Discovery of a second locality for the narrow endemic Anthemis ismelia (Asteraceae) in NW Sicily

2017

A new population of Anthemis ismelia (Asteraceae) has been discovered on Mt Pecoraro (Cinisi, NW Sicily), a limestone headland at about 14 km from Mt Gallo (Palermo), the locus classicus et unicus of this species described in 1884. Taxonomic framework, distribution update, habitat characterisation, ecology and phytosociological framework are provided, as well as meta-population numerical estimates and risk status assessment.

Assessment of genetic variation in SicilianHelichrysum(Asteraceae) and implication to germplasm conservation

2008

Some taxa of Sicilian Helichrysum related to sect. Stoeachadina have an uncertain systematic position; moreover, they are rare and endangered. In order to preserve these taxa in a genebank, a strategy to keep their genetic variation as high as possible is required. The high informative content of AFLP markers was used to assess genetic variations within and between populations and their relationships. The results show that all populations are genetically similar, even though there are two distinct groups: the first is the population referred to H. pendulum, and the second is represented by other populations belonging to several different specific and intraspecific taxa. The H. pendulum popu…

Sibling relationships as a resource for coping with traumatic events.

2014

The study investigated the correlation between the perception of sibling relationship to cope an adverse occurrence – the partial collapse of a primary school – and the indicators related to the traumatic impact set off by the event, by soliciting the child’s reminiscence of the catastrophic experience. One hundred trauma-exposed children were recruited from a Sicilian primary school and were administered the following research instruments: the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC-A), to investigate the traumatized response that can be triggered in the children involved; the Brother as a Resource Questionnaire (BRQ), to delve into the perception of sibling relationship as a resource.…

Synthesis and evaluation of a glibenclamide glucose-conjugate: a potential new lead compound for substituted glibenclamide derivatives as islet imagi…

2007

The search for novel SUR1-ligands originates from the idea to influence the in vivo behaviour by adding new structural moieties to the glibenclamide structure while preserving its binding affinity. Important application of novel conjugates might be their use as radioactively labelled tracer probes in the non-invasive investigation of the islet mass. It is known that the imaging quality of a tracer could be improved by increasing its hydrophilicity, which leads to a reduced plasma protein binding and diminished the unspecific uptake by various organs. In this study the glucose molecule was chosen as a substitute of glibenclamide to enhance hydrophilicity. As expected glucose conjugation lead…

Granger causality analysis of sleep brain-heart interactions

2014

We studied the networks of Granger causality (GC) between the time series of cardiac vagal autonomic activity and brain wave activities, measured respectively as the normalized high frequency (HF) component of heart rate variability and EEG power in the δ, θ, α, σ, β bands, computed in 10 healthy subjects during sleep. GC analysis was performed by vector autoregressive modeling, and significance of each link in the network was assessed using F-statistics. The whole-night analysis revealed the existence of a fully connected network of brain-heart and brain-brain interactions, with the ß EEG power acting as a hub which conveys the largest number of GC links between the heart and brain n…

Extraction of thermal characteristics of surrounding geological layers of a geothermal heat exchanger by 3D numerical simulations

2016

Ground thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance are key parameters for the design of closed Ground-Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems. The standard method to determine these parameters is the Thermal Response Test (TRT). This test analyses the ground thermal response to a constant heat power injection or extraction by measuring inlet and outlet temperatures of the fluid at the top of the borehole heat exchanger. These data are commonly evaluated by models considering the ground being homogeneous and isotropic. This approach estimates an effective ground thermal conductivity representing an average of the thermal conductivity of the different layers crossed by perforation. In order …
