Modeling Fire Danger in Galicia and Asturias (Spain) from MODIS images

Forest fires are one of the most dangerous natural hazards, especially when they are recurrent. In areas such as Galicia (Spain), forest fires are frequent and devastating. The development of fire risk models becomes a very important prevention task for these regions. Vegetation and moisture indices can be used to monitor vegetation status; however, the different indices may perform differently depending on the vegetation species. Uncovering dynamic information flow between stock market indices has been the topic of several studies which exploited the notion of transfer entropy or Granger causality, its linear version. The output of the transfer entropy approach is a directed weighted graph measuring the information about the future state of each target provided by the knowledge of the state of each driving stock market index. Background: Reducing the risks and impacts of pesticide use on human health and on the environment is one of the objectives of the European Commission Directive 2009/128/EC in the quest for a sustainable use of pesticides. Langerhans cells (LCs) are antigen-presenting cells in the epidermis whose roles in antigen-specific immune regulation remain incompletely understood. Desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) is a keratinocyte cell-cell adhesion molecule critical for epidermal integrity and an autoantigen in the autoimmune blistering disease pemphigus. Although antibody-mediated disease mechanisms in pemphigus are extensively characterized, the T cell aspect of this autoimmune disease still remains poorly understood. Cellular and molecular mechanisms in the induction phase of contact sensitivity.

During the induction phase of contact sensitivity, hapten-specific Th1 cells are primed by epidermal Langerhans cells. These Langerhans cells present hapten on MHC class II molecules and provide costimulatory signals. This presentation discusses the induction of cytokines in Langerhans cells and keratinocytes by haptens and their regulatory effects on contact sensitivity. Haptens were painted on the skin of normal BALB/c mice and epidermal cells were prepared at various times thereafter. Langerhans cell-derived interleukin (IL)-1 beta mRNA was observed as early as 15 min after hapten paining.
