Novel instruments and methods to estimate depth-specific thermal properties in borehole heat exchangers

2020

Standard thermal response tests (TRT) are typically carried out to evaluate subsurface thermal parameters for the design and performance evaluation of borehole heat exchangers (BHE). Typical interp ...

Prediction of Swirling Flow in a Corrugated Channel

1991

Laminar and turbulent flow in a corrugated channel is simulated using HARWELL-FLOW3D. The channel represents a typical cell within a proposed design for the heat-transfer element of a rotary regenerator. Velocity vectors in planes perpendicular and parallel to the axis of a corrugation are visualised using Harwell’s graphics package, OUTPROC. Both programs were mn on Harwell’s Cray 2. The velocity vector plots show clear evidence of swirl, which is thought to be the mechanism responsible for the high rates of heat transfer in this type of heat-exchanger geometry. The swirl strength is shown to be a function of the channel geometry.

Specialization and herding behavior of trading firms in a financial market

2008

Agent-based models of financial markets usually make assumptions about agent’s preferred stylized strategies. Empirical validations of these assumptions have not been performed so far on a full-market scale. Here we present a comprehensive study of the resulting strategies followed by the firms which are members of the Spanish Stock Exchange. We are able to show that they can be characterized by a resulting strategy and classified in three well- defined groups of firms. Firms of the first group have a change of inventory of the traded stock which is positively correlated with the synchronous stock return whereas firms of the second group show a negative correlation. Firms of the third group…

A Numerical Approach to Study Shell-Side Fluid Flow in Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers

2022

Abstract The detailed CFD simulation of the shell-side flow inside shell-and-tube heat exchangers results prohibitive for large-size components, due to the large number of tubes, together with the multi-scale nature of the flow features. To overcome this issue, the porous media approach can be adopted, substituting the tube bundle with a porous domain, where a suitable momentum sink term in the Navier-Stokes equation is provided. In this paper, a novel numerical approach to estimate the crossflow shell-side pressure drop is presented: a complete characterization of the tube bundle was performed by running 2D-CFD steady-state isothermal analyses, collecting pressure gradient magnitudes and d…

Nymphaeetum candidae Miljan 1933 in Poland

2011

This paper presents the distribution, floristic composition and ecological requirements of the water plant community Nymphaeetum candidae Miljan 1933, belonging to the Potametea class. Until present this community has been reported only from north-eastern Poland. During present studies it was stated also in the south-western part of the country. Nymphaeetum candidae is considered to be a rare and endangered plant community in several countries of Central Europe.

Scirpetum radicantis Hejný in Hejný et Husák 1978 em. Zahlh. 1979, a plant association new to Poland

2011

The paper presents a rush community new to Poland - Scirpetum radicantis Hejny in Hejny et Husak 1978 em. Zahlh. 1979, belonging to the Phragmition alliance. It was discovered in fishponds near Olesno in Silesia (SW Poland). The floristic composition and the ecological requirements of this association are presented in the paper. Scirpetum radicantis is considered to be a very rare and endangered plant community in Europe.

Current distribution of Pilularia globulifera L. in Poland – changes of geographical range and habitat preferences

2013

Pilularia globulifera is a subatlantic European fern threatened with extinction. In Poland, it reaches the eastern border of its continuous range. Up to the end of the 20th century, it was observed here in 21 stands; only 2 of them existed by the second half of the century, so the species was categorized as critically endangered. Five new locations have been found in western and northwestern Poland during the last 10 years. Abundant and permanent populations grow in 3 locations, while 2 stands were ephemeral. All the current stands are situated in anthropogenic habitats with spontaneous vegetation, in oligotrophic to eutrophic waters. One of the new localities is about …

Inflammatory pituitary lesions

2021

Abstract Inflammatory pituitary lesions are rare but important differential diagnoses of nonfunctioning pituitary masses. Primary hypophysitis as an autoimmune disorder has received increasing attention over the past decades. In the last decade, immune checkpoint inhibitor–induced hypophysitis has emerged as a new type of secondary hypophysitis. Various pituitary tumors may also cause secondary hypophysitis. Systemic, noninfectious granulomatous diseases that can involve the pituitary region include sarcoidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, Erdheim-Chester disease, and Rosai-Dorfman disease. Furthermore, infectious diseases can affect the pituitary gland.…
