Moisture barrier, wetting and mechanical properties of shellac/agar or shellac/cassava starch bilayer bio-membrane for food applications

Abstract Edible bilayer membrane composed of agar (AG) or cassava starch (CAS) as a cohesive structural layer and ethanol-cast shellac layer as a moisture barrier are investigated for their potential use in food preservation as bio-packaging film, membrane or coating. Bilayer membranes containing non-plasticized shellac exhibit low water vapor permeability (WVP), from 0.89 to 1.03 × 10 −11 g m −1 s −1 Pa −1 . A high value of contact angle (≈92°) and a low liquid water adsorption rate (26 × 10 −3 μL s −1 ) indicate that these barrier layers have a quite hydrophobic surface. Bioprotection by sugars, and in particular trehalose peculiarity, is a relevant topic due to the implications in several fields. The underlying mechanisms are not yet clearly elucidated, and remain the focus of current investigations. Here we revisit data obtained at our lab on binary sugar/water and ternary protein/sugar/water systems, in wide ranges of water content and temperature, in the light of the current literature. Heterogeneous nucleation of a droplet pinned at a chemically inhomogeneous substrate: A simulation study of the two-dimensional Ising case

Heterogeneous nucleation is studied by Monte Carlo simulations and phenomenological theory, using the two-dimensional lattice gas model with suitable boundary fields. A chemical inhomogeneity of length b at one boundary favors the liquid phase, while elsewhere the vapor is favored. Switching on the bulk field Hb favoring the liquid, nucleation and growth of the liquid phase starting from the region of the chemical inhomogeneity are analyzed. A neutron scattering study of the magnetic properties of PrSn3

The intermetallic compound PrSn3 has been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. The paramagnetic phase shows overdamped crystal field excitations and an anisotropic distribution of the diffuse magnetic intensity. The dispersion relation of the excitations of the antiferromagnetic phase has been determined. The results are analyzed in terms of an anisotropic exchange coupling.
Neutron scattering study of melting ofHe3surface layers

The melting of the incommensurate phase of $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ submonolayers adsorbed on Grafoil was investigated by elastic neutron scattering. The temperature dependence of the nearest-neighbor distance, the coherence length, and the peak intensity of the structure factor can be explained by a simple model assuming a melting transition which is driven by thermally created lattice defects.
Observation of quantized subband states and evidence for surface electron accumulation in CdO from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure of well-ordered single-crystal thin films of CdO100 has been studied using angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy. Quantized electron subbands are observed above the valence-band maximum. The existence of these states provides evidence of an intrinsic electron accumulation space-charge layer near the CdO surface, an interpretation supported by coupled Poisson-Schrodinger calculations. The origin of the accumulation layer result is discussed in terms of the bulk band structure of CdO calculated using quasiparticle-corrected density-functional theory, which reveals that the conduction-band minimum at the Brillouin-zone center lies below the charge neutrality level.

Magnetic dichroism in photoemission with unpolarized light.

A magnetic dichroism in photoemission from ferromagnets induced by unpolarized light is observed for the first time in the valence band region as well as for surface states. The study was carried out with magnetized Fe(110), Co(0001), and Gd(0001) films grown epitaxially on W(110). This phenomenon leads to an intensity asymmetry for opposite directions of the sample magnetization. It can be easily used for a routine laboratory diagnostic of magnetic behavior. A simple theoretical interpretation of the phenomenon based on the atomic model is given.
