Spherical microgel colloids - Hard spheres from soft matter

1998

While gels are usually considered to be soft materials, we demonstrate that it is possible to model hard sphere behaviour when the gel structure is confined to spherical objects of sizes in the colloidal range. We have measured the static structure factor of microgel spheres dispersed in good solvents, differing in size, crosslink density and swelling behaviour, by light scattering and small angle neutron scattering. Comparing with theoretical calculations for polydisperse hard spheres we show how the interactions in highly concentrated dispersions of spherical microgel colloids are determined by an interplay of the relative length of dangling polymer ends at the surface (determined by the …

Surface investigation of adhesive formulation consisting of UV sensitive triblock poly(styrene–b-butadiene–b-styrene) copolymer

2002

Abstract Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis in conjunction with macroscopic studies such as peel testing and contact angle measurement have been undertaken to explain the nanomechanical properties of adhesive formulation consisting of triblock poly(styrene–b-butadiene–b-styrene) (SBS) copolymers. The cross-linking of this photosensitive copolymer was investigated by analyzing the mechanical and morphological changes of each phase induced by the UV exposure. Main result is that the adhesive properties are strongly influenced by the cross-linking of the polybutadiene (PB) phase leading to an increase in the surface stiffness without affecting the surface energy. AFM analysis shows that th…

Dual Ni/Ni-Co electrodeposited coatings for improved erosion-corrosion behaviour

2019

Abstract Industrial applications of hydrophobic metallic coatings are limited to durability of their surface structures against detrimental effects of the surrounding environments. In the present research, the life-long of the hierarchical structure of hydrophobic nickel coating in an erosive-corrosive solution was investigated. The effect of alloying with cobalt on strengthening the hierarchical structures was also investigated. In this regard, highly hydrophobic Ni/Ni, Ni-Co/Ni-Co, dual Ni/Ni-Co and dual Ni-Co/Ni coatings with rough hierarchical structures were electrodeposited. In situ electrochemical measurements were performed to investigate changes in corrosion resistance and hydropho…

Synthesis and Characterization of SiC/MC/C Ceramics (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) Starting from Totally Non-oxidic Precursors

2002

The reaction of poly(dimethylsilane) (PDMS) and poly(dimethylcarbosilane) (PCS) with bis(cyclopentadienyl)M dichloride Cp2MCl2 (M ) Ti, Zr, Hf) complexes has been used as a new route to obtain ceramic materials based on SiC-containing M. The reaction is completed at a relatively low temperature, 900 °C, yielding the corresponding amorphous SiC/MC ceramics which have been characterized by means of 29 Si MAS NMR. These amorphous materials have been treated at higher temperatures, 1350 °C, under a purified argon atmosphere, yielding partially crystallized products which have been studied by X-ray powder diffraction and 29 Si MAS NMR. The effect of the composition of the mixture of precursors is

H3PW12O40 supported on mesoporous MCM-41 and Al-MCM-41 materials: preparation and characterisation

2011

MCM-41 and Al–MCM-41 has been synthesized using cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant as template and adding the silica precursor to aqueous solutions containing CTAB. The obtained solids were calcined at 600 °C for 4 h. HPW heteropolyacid supported on the mesoporous were prepared using the incipient wetness method. The characterization of materials was performed by X-ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy, N2 adsorption, 29Si Cross Polarization–Magic Angle Spinning and 27Al MAS NMR. Results showed that the hexagonal structure is obtained in both cases. The Aluminium species are located inside an extra-framework. The impregnation reduces the surface area of the mesopo…

Microsphere tensiometry to measure advancing and receding contact angles on individual particles

1999

In this paper, a method to measure the advancing and receding contact angles on individual colloidal spheres is described. For this purpose, the microspheres were attached to atomic force microscope cantilevers. Then the distance to which the microsphere jumps into its equilibrium position at the air-liquid interface of a drop or an air bubble was measured. From these distances the contact angles were calculated. To test the method, experiments were done with silanized silica spheres (4.1 μm in diameter). From the experiments with drops, an advancing contact angle of 101 ± 4° was determined. A receding contact angle of 101 ± 2° was calculated from the jump-in distance into a bubble. Both ex…

Engineered Membranes for Residual Cell Trapping on Microfluidic Blood Plasma Separation Systems: A Comparison between Porous and Nanofibrous Membranes

2021

Blood-based clinical diagnostics require challenging limit-of-detection for low abundance, circulating molecules in plasma. Micro-scale blood plasma separation (BPS) has achieved remarkable results in terms of plasma yield or purity, but rarely achieving both at the same time. Here, we proposed the first use of electrospun polylactic-acid (PLA) membranes as filters to remove residual cell population from continuous hydrodynamic-BPS devices. The membranes hydrophilicity was improved by adopting a wet chemistry approach via surface aminolysis as demonstrated through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Water Contact Angle analysis. The usability of PLA-membranes was assessed through de…

<title>Miniaturized objective lens for a photoelectron emission microscope</title>

2000

Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) has turned out to be one of the most promising methods for surface analysis in the recent years. It is a full field imaging technique based on the emission of secondary electrons by far ultraviolet light or X-rays. The emission intensity of secondary electrons is critically dependent upon the acceptance angle of the incident radiation. However, the size of the microscope restricts this angle substantially. Miniaturizing the objective lens of the microscope reduces the restriction of the acceptance angle and improves the performance of the PEEM considerably. We report on the fabrication of a miniaturized objective lens containing the extraction electr…

Detaching Microparticles from a Liquid Surface.

2018

The work required to detach microparticles from fluid interfaces depends on the shape of the liquid meniscus. However, measuring the capillary force on a single microparticle and simultaneously imaging the shape of the liquid meniscus has not yet been accomplished. To correlate force and shape, we combined a laser scanning confocal microscope with a colloidal probe setup. While moving a hydrophobic microsphere (radius 5-10  μm) in and out of a 2-5  μm thick glycerol film, we simultaneously measured the force and imaged the shape of the liquid meniscus. In this way we verified the fundamental equations [D. F. James, J. Fluid Mech. 63, 657 (1974)JFLSA70022-112010.1017/S0022112074002126; A. D.…
