Simplified Model for Compressive Behavior of Concrete Columns Strengthened by Steel Angles and Strips
2010
This paper presents an analytical model to determine the compressive response of concrete members, having a square transverse cross section and reinforced with steel angles at the corners and steel strips connecting the steel angles. The model evaluates the effects of transverse strips and steel angles on confinement pressures, including strength and buckling phenomena. Compressive response was evaluated in cases of directly and indirectly loaded elements. The data produced correlate well with available experimental data.
Automorphisms of right-angled Artin groups
2012
The purpose of this thesis is to study the automorphisms of right-angled Artin groups. Given a finite simplicial graph $\Gamma$, the right-angled Artin group $G_\Gamma$ associated to $\Gamma$ is the group defined by the presentation whose generators are the vertices of $\Gamma$, and whose relators are commutators of pairs of adjacent vertices. The first chapter is intended as a general introduction to the theory of right-angled Artin groups and their automorphisms. In a second chapter, we prove that every subnormal subgroup of $p$-power index in a right-angled Artin group is conjugacy $p$-separable. As an application, we prove that every right-angled Artin group is conjugacy separable in th…
Sign-preserving solutions for a class of asymptotically linear systems of second-order ordinary differential equations
2022
We study multiplicity of solutions to an asymptotically linear Dirichlet problem associated with a planar system of second order ordinary differential equations. The existence of two sign-preserving component-wise solutions is guaranteed when the Morse indexes of the linearizations at zero and at infinity do not coincide, and one of the asymptotic problems has zero-index. The proof is developed in the framework of topological and shooting methods and it is based on a detailed analysis and characterization of the phase angles in a two-dimensional setting.
Poetes catalanes i poetes angleses als anys d'entreguerres.
On Detection of Yaw and Roll Angle Information for Vehicle Oblique Crash using Hough Transform
2014
When performing vehicle crash tests, it is common to capture high frame rate video (HFR) to observe the vehicle motion during the impact. Such videos contain a lot of information, especially when it comes to geometric data. The yaw and roll angles from the HFR video is detected by using the Hough Transform and Matlab's Image processing Toolbox. The measured Yaw angle from the HFR video are compared with real life test data captured with a gyroscopic device inside the vehicle during the oblique vehicle impact.
Immunohistochemical investigation of the brain of aged dogs. I. Detection of neurofibrillary tangles and of 4-hydroxynonenal protein, an oxidative da…
2001
In the aging dog brain lesions develop spontaneously. They share some morphological characteristics with those of Alzheimer 's disease in man. Diffuse and primitive plaques are well known, whereas neuritic plaques rarely develop. Neurofibrillary tangles have not been seen in the canine. The aim of the present investigation was to study major age-related changes of the dog's brain using paraffin sections with respect to cross-immunoreactivity of tau, A beta protein and other immunoreactive components including hydroxynonenal protein, which is a marker for oxidative damage. The occurrence of neurofibrillary tangles and of the protein tau therein was studied in serial brain sections of two dog…
Constraining multi-Higgs flavour models
2014
To study a flavour model with a non-minimal Higgs sector one must first define the symmetries of the fields; then identify what types of vacua exist and how they may break the symmetries; and finally determine whether the remnant symmetries are compatible with the experimental data. Here we address all these issues in the context of flavour models with any number of Higgs doublets. We stress the importance of analysing the Higgs vacuum expectation values that are pseudo-invariant under the generators of all subgroups. It is shown that the only way of obtaining a physical CKM mixing matrix and, simultaneously, non-degenerate and non-zero quark masses is requiring the vacuum expectation value…
