Effect of legume grains as a source of dietary protein on the quality of organic lamb meat.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the effects on lamb growth, carcass traits and meat quality of replacing conventional soybean meal in the diet with alternative legume grains. RESULTS: Twenty-eight male lambs of Comisana breed weighing 16.9 ± 2.7 kg at weaning (66 ± 6 days old) were assigned to one of four diets. Until slaughter at 129 ± 6 days of age, each group received ad libitum pelleted alfalfa hay and concentrates differing in the source of protein: chickpea, faba bean, pea or soybean meal. AbstractElasmobranchs are among the species most threatened by overfishing and a large body of evidence reports their decline around the world. As they are large predators occupying the highest levels of marine food webs, their removal can alter the trophic web dynamic through predatory release effects and trophic cascade. Chronic Moderate Hyperammonemia Impairs Active and Passive Avoidance Behavior and Conditional Discrimination Learning in Rats

Abstract The cerebral dysfunction associated with hepatic encephalopathy is generally considered to have hyperammonemia as one of its main causes. Hyperammonemia impairs the neuronal glutamate–nitric oxide–cyclic GMP pathway and the induction of NMDA receptor-dependent long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. We studied the performance of pre/neonatally and postnatally exposed rats to hyperammonemia on active avoidance, passive avoidance, and conditional discrimination tasks. Background & Aims Wheat has become the world's major staple and its consumption correlates with prevalence of noncommunicable disorders such as inflammatory bowel diseases. Spatial analysis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Galicia, Spain (2000–2005)

Abstract In Spain, the first bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case was detected in 2000 in a cow born in the Galicia region (Northwestern Spain). From then and until October 2005, 590 cases were detected, 223 of them in Galicia. In 1994, meat and bone meal (MBM) was banned on ruminant feed and, in 1996, an EU decision mandating an overall change in MBM processing was implemented. This decision was gradually applied in the territory and not enforced before July 1998. Effect of refeeding diets containing cottonseed flour with traces of gossypol on rat liver and testis

The aim of the present work was to show that cottonseed flour introduced into rehabilitation diets is not nutritionally harmful. The cottonseed flour obtained from glandless seeds contains traces of gossypol. As gossypol is known to have pathological hepatic and testicular actions, the effects on hepatic variables and on the histological appearance of liver and testis of diets containing cottonseed flour were compared with those without cottonseed flour.
